Cricket 1913
June 21, 1913. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 313 T h e Nondescripts C .C ., o f Colombo, celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary— I nearly wrote ‘ ‘ silver wedding ” !— in April. Since 1900, when the club began to take a leading place in the island’s cricket (says Amicus) 172 matches have been played, 97 won, 45 lost, which is an excellent record, though not equal to that of the Colts C .C ., which in 25 years lost fewer than 10 matches. -------------- T h e D e Saram brothers, D . B. Gunasekera, C. Horan, a fine left-hand bowler, R . Horan, and J. C. Weinman have been the club ’s cracks in recent years. In seven seasons C . Horan captured 329 wickets at 7 runs each for the Nondescripts. The club has one o f the best grounds in Ceylon, but at present lacks a pavilion. As many of the leading members o f the Ceylonese community— which is not, I believe, a poor one— are included in its ranks, this want should soon be a thing o f the past. shire ( ?l), Gloucestershire, Beds), F . H arry (Devon (?), Lancashire, Durham). Can anyone verify these? Capt. Sarel, by the way, only played for Northumberland v. Grange C .C ., needing no qualification for that, and he is scarcely a genuine instance therefore. Mr. W ills gives Keene as playing for Northumberland, as well as for Surrey and Worcestershire, but I think this is a slip. I believe Keene went straight from Worcester to the Grange. C o n g r a t u la t io n s to J.. L . Cox, who was married on April 4 (it’s a long time ago, but one didn’t hear o f it immediately) to the sister o f L. R . Tuckett, one o f his Greyville colleagues. M o r e men o f three counties have been named to me. Messrs. A . D . T aylo r, S. G. B. W ills, and A . C . Denham all kindly send lists, and from these I take the follow ing, not already given, I think, though how I came to forget some o f them I don’t know :— C. B . F ry (Surrey, Sussex, Hants), C . P ig g (Northants, Herts, Cambs), Douglas Smith (Somerset, Worcestershire, Glamorgan), John Smith, father o f Douglas (Yorkshire, Lancashire, Wor cestershire)), Lord Dalmeny (Bucks, M iddlesex, Surrey), the Rev. F . Meyrick-Jones (Hants, K ent, Norfolk), E . C. Mordaunt (Hants, M iddlesex, Kent), T . A . Higson (Cheshire, Derbyshire, Lancashire), John Holland (Leicestershire, Lancashire, Cheshire), C. Shore (Notts, Lancashire, Norfolk), the Rev. C. G. W ard (Hants, L in colnshire, Herts), Capt. E . F . Rowe (Essex, Beds, Berks), J. J. Parfitt (Surrey, Somerset, Warwickshire), G. W . H illyard (M iddlesex, Herts, Leicestershire), E . H . D . Sewell (Seds, Essex, Bucks), G. H . Wharmby' (Notts, Lancashire, Beds), W . W . F . Pullen (Somerset, Gloucestershire, Glamorgan), Dr. W . G. Heasman (Sussex, Berks, N orfolk), W . Montgomery (Surrey, Somerset, Cheshire), the Rev. C . G. Lane (Surrey, Herts, Oxfordshire, Bucks), R. A . Fitzgerald (Middlesex, Bucks, Herts), A . S. Sellick (Gloucestershire, Somerset, Wilts), W illiam Humphrey (Hants, Surrey, Norfolk), W illiam George (Shropshire, W ilts, Warwickshire), Colonel J. Fellowes (K en t, Hants, Devon), M. P . Betts (Middlesex, K ent, Essex), the Rev. E . D . Shaw (Essex, Middlesex, Herts, Bucks), the Rev. H . E . Knatchbull (Kent, Suffolk, N orfolk), E . P . Ash (N orfolk, Suffolk, Herts), H . Jenner-Fust (Kent, N orfolk, Suffolk), G. R. Johnson (Cambs, N orfolk, and Suffolk), Capt. W . G. M. Sarel (Northumberland, Surrey, Kent). C . C. Mott also played fo r Warw ickshire, and the Rev. F . N . B ird for Bucks. I t is likely that a New Zealand team will visit A us tralia during the next season down u n d er; and the pro gramme suggested for it at a meeting o f the N .Z . Cricket Council on April 28 was.— P la y Auckland before leavin g; play Newcastle, Toowoomba, Queensland, Bathurst, New South Wales, Goulburn, Victoria, B allarat or Bendigo, and two Melbourne C lu b s; and on return to New Zealand p lay Wellington. T h is seems to me on wrong lines. T h e tour is mainly an educational one. I f Toowoomba and Goulburn, Bathurst or Bendigo, can teach the Maorilanders much, the tourists will have small claim to meet state elevens. Some gate-money may be made out o f the up-country m atches; but gate ought not to be a great consideration. It is sug gested that Auckland, Canterbury, O tago, and W elling ton Associations should guarantee ^ 7 5 each towards the expenses. ------------- A c a b l e from Adelaide to Wellington in April stated that there is talk o f a team from Australia to tour New Zealand and South America. Is this a slip ? It w ill scarcely be worth the while o f a cricket team in South America to go very far from Buenos Aires. And I believe that by law the taking o f gate-money is prohibited there ! A f e w o f these are rather doubtful cases, depending on the recognition o f Gentlemen o f So-and-so matches as county games, and in the sixties and seventies people did not bother about qualifications for these. Mr. Denham queries H- P. Betts as fo r Essex. I don’t know. But I feel pretty sure that Herbert P igg, whom he gives as Northants, Herts, Cambs, never played for Cambs, though his twin brother, Charles, did. H e adds two other items with queries :— H . J.
