At Newcastle-on-Tyne, June 9 and 10. An excellent innings of 65 by G. L. Hunting, the old Lorettonian, and a hard-hit 32 by W . Robb were the chief features of the home side’s display. Lincolnshire were largely indebted to Broughton for their lead of 46; but Thompson, Pullein, Riley, and Hallam all made useful scores. An innings each w as go t through on Monday. On Tuesday the home side had all the best of the play, and won eventually by 168 runs. Hunting was again seen to advantage; W ingham (from Kent) made a chanceless century, and Norbury (from Hamp shire) bowled in deadly form. The Lincolnshire captain, W . E. Thompson, played a steady and plucky innings, but the rest failed at the pinch. First Innings. W. W. Meldon, c Nevile, b Day Norbury, c Rose, b Day ... J. S. Newbit, b Riley G. L. Oxford University v. Scotland. At Oxford, June 9, 10, and 11. The ’Varsity lacked Campbell, Twining, Bardsley, and Wilkinson ; A. C. William son of Brasenose played for the first time. Boswell and Colman added 74 for the second wicket in an hour, but there was no other stand of any note in the Dark Blue innings. Benskin, formerly of Leicestershire, did the hat trick at the expense of Williamson, Forrester, and Shaw. At call of time Scotland were 75 behind with 5 to go, Kerr (43*) having shown the best form. On Tuesday Kerr was soon out, and the Afrikander, Melle, finished off the innings by doing the hat trick. There were eight doubles in Oxford’s second, but no one made more than 25, Sievwright, the slow left hander, bowling particularly well and being helped by the gusty wind. Set 187, Scotland looked certain to make the runs as long as Tait stayed. By really fine cricket he scored 54 in 70 minutes. Fraser then put in some good work with the ball, and 6 wickets were down for 109. W ith Scotland apparently in the cart, Balfour-Melville and Orr defended stubbornly, and managed to defer the finish till Wednesday, when their side needed 45 to win with two to go. On the last morning Melle go t rid of the outstanding wickets with only 11 added, and the ’Varsity won a close match by 34 runs. First Innings. O x io r d U n iv e r s ity . F. H.
