Cricket 1913
Jun e 7, 19 13 . CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 279 30, and Birch captured five for 49. In hitting off the runs Leek lost a wicket at 5, but H. Ellerton and H. Thompson took the score to 36. The next partnership, that of Thompson and Day. practically determined the issue, for it was not dissolved until the board showed 76. D ay finished at 26, but Thompson was undefeated when play ceased with Leek’s total at 87 for 4. Thomp son played sound cricket for his 38, and won the match with two successive boundaries, the only two he scored. In unfinished games most progress was made a t Fenton, where the home team played a full innings for 192 runs, the leading scorers being P. W. Baggerley (35), H. Dearing (34), W. S. White (25*), andH . Shellern (20). The first two put o n 68 for the first wicket, and the other two 30 for the tenth. Stoke's batting was confined to 19 overs, and they lost two Wickets in the course of them, Nichols (15*) and J. L. Baggerley being in possession when rain stopped play. W hat is usually Tunstall’s big game of the year— their meeting with Burslem— was utterly spoilt, but the home club found sufficient opportunity to put themselves in a strong posi tion, declaring with their score at 136 for four. Of these T. H. Naylor contributed 39, R. Harris 32, and J. Broad 30, and Burs lem had only ten balls— and lost a wicket to Morgan— when the merciless element put a stop to cricket. Crewe Alexandra showed some improvement at Norton. | but it must be said th at the bowling against them was very | moderate. The Alexandra’s innings was closured a t 179 for eight, Charles Gresty playing well for 51, while the captain, E. Osborn, and J. Dickinson were substantial helpers with 38 and 23 respectively. In Yorkshire there was a sensation, the Dewsbury captain (011 the home ground) withdrawing his men from the field as a protest against the rowdy barracking of the spectators while Batley were batting. Ernest Needham made a century for Sheffield v. Browling Old Lane. Leeds totalled 228 for 5 v. Harrogate, and declared— Smith 88*, Capt. White 78. Harro gate could only make 62, Lord taking 5 for 31. For Bradford v. Keighley Knutton took 6 for 54. In the Durham League only three matches were finished. Boldon beat Durham C ity by 8 wickets, J . J . Common, the county stumper, scoring 45*, and Kitchener, formerly of Hants, taking 7 for 21. Scores: 78— 80 for 2. Hendon had their first victory — over Eppleton. Eppleton made 138 (N. Andrews 32*, and apparently last man in, A. L. Scott-Owen 28) ; Hendon 142 for 8 (N. H. Dixon 52, G . Metcalf 37). The game of the day was Sunderland v. Burnmoor— a real thriller, this. Hendren (39) and H. M. Stobart (36) lashed out at the start, and ran up 50 in half-an-hour against the usually deadly Morris and Smith. After they were parted only R. Blunt (33) did much. Total, 152. The Sunderland cracks— Hubert, Brooks, Russell, Squance— left early. Upon the youngsters fell the brunt. They bore it in gallant fashion. The brothers Pickersgill made a very useful stand, but 5 were out for 71. J. Hopper quickly hit up 20; then came a stand by H. D. Bodin (39*) and B. H. Hopper (20), the heroes of the Cliester-le-Street match last year. They carried the score from 92 to 160, winning the game for their side after it had looked fairly in the cart. Two seasons ago Bodin was playing for Sunderland’s fourth team ! A few features of the drawn games must be noted. Philadel phia totalled 200 v. Seaham Harbour, with T. Teasdale’s 44 as top score. Seaham had made 150 for 5 when time came, thanks almost entirely to the brothers Rowell (G. 60, F. 50*), who added n o for the fifth wicket. James (61) and F. P. Whittaker (41) made a good first wicket stand for Whitburn v. South Shields ; score 115 for 5 when rain closured. Thackeray took 5 (for 43) of the 6 Wearmouth wickets that fell v. Chester-le- Street. ------------ C EN TU R Y LIST. M a y 23. M. T. Smith, 136, Trojans v. Tichborne Park. M a y 24. J. H. Balfour, 105, Moor Hall v. 16 Farmers of Essex. M a y 26. J. R. F.
