U m pires : Richardson and Bagshaw. Kent v. Somerset. A. P. Day made his first appearance of the season for Kent at Catford Bridge on Monday, and Somerset were strengthened by P. R. Johnson and B. D. Hylton-Stewart. For a time Kent, having the good fortune to bat first, did very well. Hardinge and Humphreys put up 80 for the first wicket. But from the time that J. C. White came on nearly all the batsmen were more or less in difficulties. A slow left-hander, White has considerable swing, though no great b rea k ; his going-away ball got him most of his wickets. Woolley made 36— including one big drive for 6 off White— very qu ick ly; and Huish and Blythe added 44 for the ninth wicket. This last stand rather spoiled White’s figures. Before it he had taken 5 for 38. But 7 for 83 was an analysis more than creditable. Somerset began badly, and had 7 out for 70. Up to that point only Johnson and Daniell had made any real resistance. Hardy joined Braund and hit well, making six successive scoring strokes for 4; and the eighth wicket all but doubled the score, which at the close was 139 for 8. Hardy was out at once on Tuesday morning, and the innings closed for 146. Kent started their second innings in the style expected of K e n t; Humphreys scored much faster than Hardinge, and when he was out at 118, just after luncheon, had made 70 in 95 minutes. Just before that he had been missed, though Johnson, who had to run hard to get to the ball, did well in touching it at all. Hardinge and Seymour added 132 before the former was out, having batted 3 hours. He hit eleven 4’s. Hardinge and Seymour kept up the p ace; the former reached his 100 off one ball, and Seymour hit the verandah on the pavilion roof with the next. After batting 3 hours for his 105, which was quite chanceless and included eleven 4’s, Hardinge was bowled bv Hardy, the bails flying almost double a pitch’s length. The second wicket had added 132. Woolley and Seymour made the pace hotter than ever, and added 80 together. Seymour only took 2 hours to make his 118, and besides the 6 mentioned hit twelve 4’s. At 389 for S Dillon declared, and before stumps were drawn at 6.20, owing to bad light, Somerset had lost 3 for 72, in spite of a very promising opening by Daniell and Bajana. On the last morning nobody but Poyntz did anything, and Kent won by 354 runs. Woolley had his first bowling success of the season, though some of his wickets were a trifle cheap. Sussex. ... 146 Total A crowd of over 6,000 at Sheffield on Monday saw Sussex crack up badly in their first innings. Fender hit three 4’s off successive balls, and was bowled by the n ex t; Cox stayed So minutes for 21 ; Vincett hit out desperately, sending one ball into the pavilion for 6, and also making four 4’s ; the rest was silence. The last wicket stand (37) was the best. Rhodes and Wilson in 75 minutes put up 129 for the first Yorkshire w icket; but the England man was not at his best. Wilson stayed n o minutes, and was then well caught one-handed by Vincett at square-leg from a hit that must have cleared the ropes had a short man been fielding there. Hirst and Kilner added 52 together. At call of time the score was 228 for 7. Haigh hit up 56 on the second morn ing, and Sussex had to go in with arrears of 182 to make up. Cox went in first with Vine. A drive by the Wareham man was signalled as a boundary by the umpire, but did not reach the ropes, and Vine stood in the middle of the pitch and saw his wicket put down. Chaplin came out to consult with the Yorkshire captain, and it was agreed that Vine should resume— a decision most heartily applauded by the crowd. Vine made 34 in 75 m inutes; but the one outstand ing performance was that of Fender, who in 65 minutes scored 76 (three 6’s, seven 4’s) by forcing play of the very highest order. Robert Relf helped him to add 81 for the fifth w icket; but the rest did little, and at 5.20 Yorkshire won a victory which had never been really in doubt after the first hour or so. Sir Archibald White had a thumb-joint dislocated by a drive from Vine, and will probably be kept out. of the field for some time. First Innings. S ussex .
