Cricket 1913

M a ? 31, 1913. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OE THE GAME. 2 4 o THE SCORE-BOOK. Cricket in the West Indies. L E EW AR D ISLAND S C R IC K E T TOURNAM ENT . With the hope of improving cricket in the colony, the Governor, Sir Hesketh Bell, lately presented a challenge shield to be played for by the islands composing it. The greater cricket centres o f the West Indies— Barbados, Trinidad, and British Guiana—have their annual cup tourna ment ; and the Windward Islands— Grenada, St. Lucia, and St. Vincent— play for the Cork Challenge Cup. Now the Leeward Islands have come into line; and only Jamaica and Tobago, of the islands of much importance, are left out in the cold. A week’s cricket at St. John’s, Antigua, beginning on April 14, saw the competition inaugurated in most hopeful fashion. All four Presidencies placed teams in the field. Antigua, the seat of government, had clearly the best side; but inasmuch as the other competitors, from one cause or another, had not enjoyed the same amount of practice, and the Antigua men were playing on their own “ midden,” the superiority of the winners was perhaps somewhat flattered. Dominica in particular suffered from hasty preparation, and had practically a scratch side. Their chief bat, W . M. W igley, played the best two innings, of the week. Possibly the Montserrat men were individually as good as those of St. K itts ; but, whereas the last-named wetfe handled with great judgment in the field, the Montserrat bowling was woefully mismanaged, while their best bats altogether failed them. In dealing with teams which contain a mixture of race and of colour, the tact and firmness of a captain invari ably plays an important part. Both Antigua and St. Kitts were very lucky in their respective captains, T . E. Peters and G. O ’Donnell Walton. West Indian umpiring has frequently been criticised adversely. There was no room for that sort of thing during the week at St. John’s. The umpiring there could hardly have been improved upon, and not a single decision was cavilled at. Perambulators v. Etceteras. In the last of the Cambridge trial matches, played on May 19, 20, and 21, a good many runs were scored, though they were not very evenly divided, the Perambulators, after declaring their second innings closed at 163 for 6, winning by 170 runs. Several batsmen distinguished themselves, but they were all men whose form is already well known ; and no new talent was discovered in the bowling .line. G. A. Fairburn changed sides on the third day, and thus is found bowling for both teams. First Innings. P er am bu lato r s . T. Garvey, b Henry............................. 74 F.
