Cricket 1913

M ay 24, 1913. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 221 century in first-class cricket. He hit thirteen 4’s. Three I^eicester wickets went cheaply before lunch, and Wood left shortly after; then Coe and Mounteney hit out, and added 61 in about half-an-hour. Coe was bowled by Jeeves, who got the wi'ckets of Odell and Shipman in the course of his next four balls, and finished up with a really good analysis. He looks like being' very valuable to his side. Astill and Shields, by dogged play, delayed the inevitable; but in the end Warwickshire won by 271 runs. First Innings. W a r w ick sh ir e . Second Innings. Smith (E. There was nothing in the constitution of the premier club’s team in this match on May 15 and 16 to suggest an easy victory for it at an early stage of the second day’s play ; but the county players were not seen at their best in either batting or bowling, and the M.C.C. always looked to have a bit the better of the game. Douglas won the toss, but put Kent in. T . A. L. Whittington, the Glamorgan captain, whose excellence the public scarcely realise, was highest aggregate scorer in the match; C. E. Hatfeild and Hardinge did something in each innings for Ken t; and N. Haig finished off the game, after making the highest in dividual score in it, by a lusty drive into the pavilion, a broken window resulting. J. W. Hearne hit a 6 and a 5 •n his 30. Watson of Norfolk took a wicket with the first | ball he had ever sent down in a first-class match; but as he has been playing for his county some time, there was not much in this as a “ record.” Dillon was apparently taken in the slips by Hearne at 18 in his second innings; but Hearne was not quite sure that it was really a catch, and the umpires disagreed, it was said. Anyway, Dillon con tinued. Possibly the belief that Trott had given him out )vas a mistaken one. The umpire at short-leg was scarcely in the best position to judge. J. E. Raphael dislocated his shoulder in throwing in from the country on the first day, and of course could take no further part in the game. Fresh from a capital victory at Leyton, Derbyshire had to substitute Root for Bracey, who had a damaged hand. Hampshire lacked several of their best, and A. J. L. Hill captained in Sprot’s absence. A. P. Rutherford, an old Reptonian, A. Jaques, a member of the Trojans side, who went with the M.C.C. Team to the West Indies, and Charters, from Aldershot, were all included, while Pothecary was given another trial. On Thursday only two Hampshire batsmen did anything. Bowell and Brown put on 137 to gether for the third wicket in 95 minutes, and made between them 170 of the 217 from the bat. Bowell batted 155 minutes for his 103, drove well and placed to leg neatly, and hit fifteen 4’s. Brown slashed hard, but gave no chance. The first Derbyshire wicket fell at 9 ; but Oliver and Cadman put on 98 in an hour and a quarter, and when, stumps were drawn the Peak County was only 80 behind with 8 wickets to fall. Cadman and Morton, continuing, were not parted on Friday till they had added 71 in all. Cadman batted 160 minutes, and hit ten 4’s. Except for Chapman, the rest fai’ed ; but Derbyshire had a useful lead, of 34. There were only two real stands in Hampshire’s second. Stone and Remnant added 54 for the fourth wicket, and towards the end Jaques and Newman hit out pluckily together. Want ing 126, Derbyshire made 54 of them for the loss of Oliver before play closed; and on Saturday morning they easily hit off the runs required, only losing one more wicket. First Innings.
