Seventy of the h i bowled, 17 of them failing to take a wicket, and only ten effecting 10 or more dismissals. Twenty-eight men represented the Transvaal in its five matches, and this, in spite of the fact that S. J. Snooke, L. J. Tancred, G. C. White, J. W. Zulch, L. A. Strieker, and T. Camp bell were all absentees throughout. Beaumont only played in two matches, Pegler and Ward in one each, so that the Transvaal members of the 1912 S.A. Team were by no means conspicuous. The Free State called upon 23 men, Western Province upon 17, Eastern Province and Natal upon 16 each, and Griqualand West, with only one match, upon 11. Men of whom a good deal was expected as batsmen failed ; but others did well, and on the whole there can be little cause for despondency as to South Africa's batting strength. Herbert Taylor stands easily first; his brother Dan, the Hands brothers, Jewell, Commaille, Lindsay, Susskind, A. H. Cooper, Carter, G. Hearne, Conry, Glisson (six double figures in seven innings, and only one of them under 20), Lawrance, Delbridge, Morkel, Beningfield, and others did well. Nourse was much below his usual form, but made amends by his deadliness with the ball. He and Baumgartner were the only men who took 20 wickets. The Western Province bowlers did better than had been expected, practically all of them having good figures; but Eastern Pro vince, Transvaal, and the Free State all seemed weak in the attack. The 11 matches produced 7,258 runs for the loss of 351 wickets — average 20-6 per wicket. B attin g an d B o w lin g A v e r a g e s . Inns. Baumgartner, H. V. (T.) 5 Beaumont, R. (7\) ... 3 Bell, P.
