At Trent Bridge on Monday Surrey cut rather an in glorious figure before Wass and Riley, though the wicket was said to be slow rather than difficult. Nearly 6,ooo people paid gate, and though there was not a full day’s play, Nottingham, with three hours, fared rather better than other centres. Notts passed the Surrey total with 7 wickets still in hand, George Gunn batting w ell; and on Tuesday (when again about 6,000 paying spectators were present) they gained a lead of 109. Iremonger played one of his cautious innings; Payton, who had some luck, dis played more enterprise. Hobbs and Hayward quickly set to work to wipe off the arrears. Before they were parted they had done so, for the score was 112—made in 95 minutes — before Hobbs left for a brilliant 69. Alletson dismissed Hayes by a catch very like Remnant’s at Lord’s on the same day, stopping the ball by jumping and turning to catch it. Hayward batted 2J hours for his 64. Then came a slump. Abel, with fortune favouring, made 30; but 8 were out for 204 at call of time. On the last day Strudwick played up pluckily, and Notts were set to get 127. They had to struggle hard; but a useful stand by George Gunn and Hardstaff for the second wicket, and another by the latter and John Gunn for the third, put them well on the road, and eventually they won by 4 wickets, thanks largely to the elder Gunn. Hitch delivered three no-balls. Somerset v. Gloucester. There was 110 play at all at Taunton on Monday; and on Tuesday a fresh wicket had to be prepared. Thanks chiefly to Braund, who made 60 in 2 hours, the home side finished with quite a useful total. The visitors lost one for 21 before call of time; on Wednesday J. C. White, who has never before done anything at all like this in county cricket, bowled in such deadly form that all were out for 55. Somerset made 96 for 8, and declared, Braund again being highest scorer; but Gloucestershire averted defeat, Douglas Robinson playing very steadily for his 37. In the match White had 10 wickets for 50. First innings. S o m er set . j. Daniell, c Langdon, b Parker ... M. P. Bajana, c Jessop, b Dennett P. R. Rotherham, which had had an unfortunate experience in the preceding week, when the match between the York shire XI. and the district was spoiled by rain, was more blessed than any otlvr cricket centre on Monday, and a full day’s play, much in favour of the home side, was got through. Gill bowled very effectively, taking 6 for 24 in all, the last three infour balls. Holmes, who had on the Saturday run up a century for his club, Paddocks, and Birtles topped 50, and with a wicket still outstandingthe Yorkshiremen led by 158 at close of play, and won byan innings and 28 runs on Tuesday, only Nelson and Scholfield offering any real resistance to the bowling.
