Cricket 1913
182 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. M a y 10, 1913. Soccer football crowd except on Bank Holidays, and those ardent officials who speak about taking cricket to the masses are simply crying for the moon. Imagine the desecration caused by League win, tie, or wrangle principles dragged into the purest, straightest game invented of man ! That, at any rate, will never happen until the M.C.C. hauls down its flag. The opponents of the Monmouthshire county XL will find their task less facile this season if, as rumoured, H. A. Gilbert plays regularly for the side. A real bowler, this one, At Oxford he enjoyed the distinction of hitting the stumps of nearly every one of the “ big ” batsmen against whom he bowled when playing for the ’Varsity, from Ranji down wards. And was it not he who in May, 1909, when wired for to be at Birmingham for the first Test, answered : “ R o t! Who are you getting a t? ” But he materialised during the wee sma’ hours, though after all he was not played. Talking of Ranji, whom everyone writes of as the “ Jam Sahib,” although he himself renders it “ Jamsaheb,” reminds me that he is running the show on the other side for the forthcoming M.C.C. tour in India. Lucky wights, those who go on that journey. I ’m wondering if there will be a vacancy for a scorer, or even for an umpire! Club Cricket Notes and Jottings. The W e s t^ K e n t W a n d e r e r s held their last social event of the off season on Thursday, April 24, when 250 members and guests were present, and dancing and whist made the hours pass all too fleetly. These events have been a huge success, and have helped to increase the already considerable local popularity of the club. Support has been hearty, and the circle of those interested in the club's activities has been considerably widened. With reference to the match list which follows, it may be pointed out that July 24 is to be a very special day indeed. The match is for the benefit of local charities, and Mr. Christopherson will bring a strong team. The Dover Road Club will join forces with the W.K.W. for this game. Mr. G. F. Howell, 101, Evelyn Street, Deptford Park, S.E., is the W.K.W.’s Hon. Sec. The match list follows :— F ir s t T e a m . 3— Clapham (H.). 10— Camberwell House (A.). 12—Nat. Provincial Bank (A. L a w r e n c e , C a n t e r b u r y , is one of the historical clubs of a county in which cricket has always had firm root. Its Hon. Sec. is Mr. J. Dean, Cromer House, South Canterbury; and its fixture-list, including the A team’s games, runs to about fifty matches. A comparatively late start is made by the first team, and the end is reached early; May 10 to September 3 in clusive cuts out at least four weeks which ought to belong to the cricket season. But St. Lawrence’s season is a busy one while it lasts. They are lucky in having so charming a home as Charlton Park, and beyond doubt the kindness of Sir Spencer P. Maryon-Wilson, Bart., in allowing the club to play there is fully appreciated. Doubtless, too, Gradidge Imperial Drivers are in pretty general use in the club, for a member of the first XI. not wholly unconnected with those weapons has often shown with what effect they can be wielded.
