Cricket 1913

178 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. M a t 10, 1913. 1897, ’98, ’99, 1900, ’01, ’02, ’03, ’04, ’05, ’ 10, and ’ 11 lists only the figures of those players who batted or bowled in a certain qu alifyin g number of innin gs are given, w hile in some instances not even the names of those who failed to qu alify are appended, so th at in a few cases I am not sure whether players turned out at all in some years, and in others I have been compelled to g iv e imperfect totals for the period. It is a pity not to have the full records of such stalw arts as J. A. K n igh t, J. G . M . Bell, and C . F. Reiner am on g the batsmen, j . R. H aynes, G . R . Blades, V . R. B rom age, and others am on g the b o w le rs; but it cannot be helped. T h e m issing figu res w ould not, in a’l likelihood, affect their avera ges much. Here, then, are the : B a t t in g A v e r a g e s : 18 9 8 -19 12 I n c l u s iv e . (100 innings or more.) ( N o t e . — Owing to the fact th at in the averages of some seasons only those who played a certain qualifying number of innings are included, the rest being set down “ also played but did not qualify,” or left unmentioned altogether, these are not absolutely complete. P. D rap er’s 113 v. Beddington, and G . H. Nelson’s 118* v. H ampstead Nondescripts in 1890; Nelson, 106 v. the Nondescripts again in 1891 ; and G . B acon, 130 v. Beddington, and A. C . Havers, 104 v. P allin gsw ick, in 1896. From 1897 onwards it is possible to say who made centuries, though only from 1906 can I tell w ith certainty whether any man in any year (except R . A. Sheppard in 1903) made more than one. In 1897 R . M. Bell, J. A. K n igh t, and F. Morrison were the century^ scorers. (By the w ay, I have not included the ’97 figures in the averages, because to do so would render them even less complete, so m any names of men w h o I feel sure played in a few matches bein g m issing.) In 1898 no one seems to have made a century for the club. In 1899 A. C . Havers and L . Jackson did so ; in 1900 J. Bell, C. Costin, R. S. D ally, G . H. Hadfield, and J. T . Illington ; in 1901 G . H. Hadfield and E . A. R edm an; in 1902 F . A. B. Anderson, R. M. B ell, and L . Ja ck so n ; in 1903 R. A. Sheppard (3); in 1904 G . H. Hadfield, C . F. Reiner, C . C . Roberts, and R. A.
