A U C K L A N D . T h is match, at Napier, w as also played during the E aster holidays (March 22 and 24). T h o u gh the visitors lacked O lliff and B rook-Sm ith, they w ere altogether too strong for the home side. H em us won the toss from M acassey, and A uckland batted first. Sale and Anthony added 121 for the fifth w icket, a fte r 4 had fallen for 94, H em us alone h avin g done much up to that point. T he A uckland total of 280 proved too much for H a w k e ’s Bay. T he first w icket realised 35, and Creed and Fulton added 68 for the second; but the rem ainder slumped before Sneddon. A uckland lost 5 wicketsi cheaply in their second in n in g s; but then Somervell and W rig h t hit out hard, and added 162 for the sixth. T h e innings w as declared, and H a w k e ’s B ay went in to g e t 427 runs to w in. T h ey were beaten by 343, the w icket bein g (I quote) “ a trifle crum py.” Fulton bowled w ell in A uckland’s firs t; but apart from him and Creed the losers’ cricket w a s very poor. T h e first innin gs of H aw k e’s B ay adds up one sh o rt; the analysis is incomplete and hope lessly w ron g in one innings, but is given for w hat little it m ay be worth. N ew Zealand scorers and reporters seem terribly careless. First innings. A u c k la n d . Second innings. L. G. Hemus, c Fairey, b Fulton ••• 43 b Nelson ............................. 11 F.
