T h e visitors 1 j were more strongly represented than u s u a l; but Southland quite held their own. A distinct feature of the g am e was that in the first innings of each side the last w icket produced the best stand, D o ig and Gilbertson adding 42 for the home side, CondlifTe and M cLaughlin 46 for O tago . T h e tw o Ham iltons put on 38 for the third w icket in Southland’s first, and 90 for the same w icket in the second. M cL au gh lin , quite a boy, left-hand w ith a leg break, made a very good impression by his bow ling for O t a g o ; and H untley, a g o o g lv man, o f whom H arry T rott spoke highly, also did well.
