Cambridge University Trial Match : XI. v. XII. O n l y four blues w ere included in the twenty-three. On May 1 (on an unprepared pitch, that m ade ready having been ruined by rain) the R est scored 263. Cum berlege started slow ly, but m ade his) last 30 off 4 o v e rs; Wood, the old Cheltonian, stayed tw o hours for 62 ; but P an k (seven 4 ’s), Straker, and Woodroffe all livened up the gam e, the tenth w icket (Pank and Woodroffe) producing 74 in forty m inutes. F rid ay’s w as a brief d a y ’s play, a thunderstorm at 3 o ’clock stopping the gam e. J. H . Naum ann, the Malvern freshman (left medium), bowled ca p ita lly ; Morrison batted well, and S aville hit out effectively. On Saturday W . R . G osling w a s shifted to the side of the X I., E . C . B aker h avin g received an injury which prevented his takin g part further. J. W hite, the old W ellingburian, bowled capitally for the X I ., and the other side could only m ake 123; but the X I. never looked like g e ttin g the runs needed, though R iley, the Australian M oC aughey, and G osling showed good form on a dead w icket. F ive batsmen were “ c and b” in this innings. Wood (a capital wicket-keeper as w ell as a good, steady bat), N aum ann, White, M cCaughey, Davies, P an k, and Woodroffe showed form that should not decrease their chances of places in the eleven ; but the most that can be hoped for by the m ajority of them is a trial, for there are ten blues to be considered first.
