J an . 18, 1913. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 11 Matches and Accounts. V IC TO R IA v. W E STERN AU STR A L IA . Begun on Friday, November i, this match was left drawn on Monday, Saturday having been a blank, owing to rain. As in the game with South Australia, the tourists had distinctly the worst of matters. A. Randell, who did not play at Adelaide, hit up a dashing 6 t in under an hour, cutting well, and making ten 4’s. A. C. Facy, the ex-Tasmanian, bothered most of the batsmen, and had a capital analysis. When the home side batted E. V. Carroll made a brilliant 54 in forty-five minutes, and Seitz played an excellent innings in more sedate style. Ryder— one of John Worrall’ s colts, and reckoned among the most promising all-rounders V ic toria has had for many years— showed fine form, and Hartkopf and Facy, hitting out, added 144 together for the sixth wicket. There was never much danger of defeat for the Westralians, and rain at 5 o’clock put a premature end to the game. Ransford had injured an ankle, and could not field. W estern A ustralia . Deferred from Friday to Saturday (November 9) on account of rain, this match was begun before an attendance of about 1,500 on the Sydney Cricket Ground. Evers won the toss, and sent the home side in on a soft, but not very difficult, wicket. The left-hander, Christian, bowling with fine judgment, was too good for every one but Trumper, who played in great form for 5r, his ten colleagues accounting for 42 among them. The catch by which Rowe dismissed the crack was a remarkable one. Christian followed up his fine bowling b y a useful innings of 30 ; bu t R. J. A. Massie, the tall son of the big hitter of other days, and A. Mailey were too much for most of the Westralians, only Bott and Randell, besides the ex-Victorian, making doubles. Mailey and McKew were sent in to play out tim e ; but the former lost his wicket before play closed. There was more rain on Sunday n ig h t; Trumper and Waddy, however, did not appear to find the wicket— or the bowl ing— difficult. They added 88 runs in 37 minutes for the third wicket. Bigger hitting than this was to come, however. Trumper was out at 139 (his 55 runs took 79 minutes), and 8 wickets were down for 182. Then P. S. Arnott (Balmain) and C. V. Single (University), both colts, added 146 in 48 minutes between 3.12 and the tea in te rv a l! In all their stand realised 160 ; Am o tt hit fourteen 4’ s in his 80 not out, and Single nine in his 72. Trumper was not aware that the match was timed to finish that evening, or he would have declared, it is said. As it was, there was no chance of getting the Westralians out a second time. They lost Rowe and Edmondson with only 6 scored ; but then Howard, the stonewaller, and Christian added 77 unparted before time came. N ew S outh W ales . First Innings. Second Innings. V. T.
