E U R O P E A N S v. C E Y L O N E S E . T his is the g rea t match of the season in the island. It w as instituted in 1887, when Ashley W alker, the old Cantab and Y o rk sh ire cricketer, and G eorge Vandespar were among the European p la ye rs; and am ong well-known English players w h o have taken part in the matches since have been numbered A . L. Gibson, L . H . G ay, V . F. S. Craw ford, W . T . G resw ell, P. R . M ay, W . F . O . Faviell, A. O. W hitin g, A. T abor, P . F . Hadow , C . H . Abercrombie, and F. L . Shand. T here w as no match between 1888 and 1893, and none in ’94, ’97, 1903, ’04, ’06, ’07, ’08, or ’09. O f the 16 played the Ceylonese have won 10, their opponents 4, and 2 have been drawn. S corin g has never ruled high, and it is a fact worth noting th at never before h as a total of 200 been registered by each side, as in the 1913 match. In fact, the only previous totals of 200 or more have been 281 by the Europeans in 1911 and 217 by the Ceylonese in 1 9 ° I \ T h e sixteenth m atch took place on the Colombo C .C .’s ground on April 4 and 5, in glorious weather and before big crowds. It w a s a capital gam e— hard fought, full of dram atic interest, and w ith fortune seem ing to favour first one side, then another. A . L. Gibson won the toss for his side, but the start on an excellent w icket w as disappointing. Four of the best men w ere out for 63. T here w ere then partnerships of 33 each for the fifth and sixth w ickets by Gibson and Siedle and by Forbes and Siedle, but 7 were down for 129. A t this stage Rubie joined G resw ell, who had not yet scored, and these tw o added 43. W ith K ilm ister and G resw ell together another stand w as made. T h e old Reptonian h it finely all round the w icket, off-driving with special force, and 74 more were added (52 of them in 20 minutes) before he w as out for 70 (ten 4’s). A total of 247 was more than satisfactory' after so poor a beginning. Amath, the crack M alay bowler, w as most successful with the ball. T h e Ceylonese made a wretched start— 1 for o, 2 for 2, 3 for 13. Then Am ath stayed w ith D . L . D e Saram while 34 w ere added for the fourth w icket, and after he had gone D e K retser and D e Saram added 78. Melder also ga ve De Saram useful help. T h e crack left-hander looked safe for his century, but at 84 G reswell beat him. H e hit two 6’s and ten 4 ’s, playing in great style all through. Melder also show ed capital form , and D ias hit a m igh ty 6 olT Siedle. T h e innings closed for 217— 30 in arrear. Gres- w ell’s bow lin g and R u bie’s w icket-keeping w ere first-class. The second innings of the Europeans w as a very poor show. Horan and Amath bowled in deadly style, and the only stands were 33 for the second w icket by D aniell and Martin, and 33 for the sixth by G resw ell and Faw cett. O nly five w ickets w-ere down w ith 97 up ; but the innings closed for the addition of another sin g le ! Horan had three w ickets in one over, but just missed the hat trick. W ith only 129 wanted to win, the Ceylonese looked to have quite a good chance. But four men fell to K ilm ister and G resw ell with only 8 sco red ; and from this bad start the side never quite recovered, though E. R . D e Saram played an uphill gam e in splendid style, and had some help from M elder and D e K retser. T h e Europeans won by 34 runs, th an ks m ainly to G resw ell, top scorer in each innings, and w ith 14 w ickets for 106 in the match. T h e catch by which Gibson dism issed D ias w as a remarkable one. T h e E ssex man was fielding at silly point, and D ias h it a ball tremendously hard. G ibson ’s left hand go t to it, and did not let it slip, th ough it looked any odds again st the catoh bein g made. E u r o p e a n s . First Innings. V. F. S. L IM A v. C A L L A O . T h is twelve-a-side match w as played on March 16 on the Santa B eatriz ground a t Lim a, and after a well-contested g am e resulted in a victory for the visitors by 31 runs. H . A. Milne and Captain D aniels put up 70 for the first w icket of C allao. L im a had 6 w ickets down for 60, and one man w as a b se n t; but the tail played up so pluckily that the last four w ickets more than doubled the score. R . G . Brown bowled most effectively. It is alw ays a pleasure to have intelligence from the outposts o f the cricket army ; The West Coast Leader of March 20, containing the score of this match, reached us through Mr. F . F . K elly, of New Y o rk , but direct new s from Peru w ill be welcome at any time. L im a . C a l l a o . H. A. Milne, c Cockburn, b Reid Capt. Daniels, b Sturgess................ R. G.
