156 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. M ay 3, 1913. T H E SCORE-BOOK. Cricket in South Africa. T R A N S V A A L v. G R IQ U A L A N D W E S T . T h is match a t the W anderers’ Ground, Johannesburg, on March 20 and 21, w as outside the C urrie Cup T ourn a ment, which the K im berley team did not enter. T ransvaal played rather a queer-looking side, the absentees including Tancred, W hite, Snooke, Zulch, L . A. Strieker, W ard, Pegler, B aum gartn er, L e R oux, C ook, Susskind, Jackson, Berry, Thompson, H eather, and Floquet. It is obvious that all of these could not have played— unless T ransvaal had put odds in the field !— but almost any one of them could have replaced any one of the m ajority of those playing with advan tage. W illiam Q u aife and W hitehead (of C ape Town) were included in the K im berley side, both h avin g been coaching in D iamondopolis this season. T h e visitors had the best of the gam e all through, no one but Strieker (a cousin of Louis Strieker), A. H . Cooper, and E lw orthy doin g much for T ran svaal with bat or ball. In the first in nin gs Beaumont and Cooper added 78 for the third w icket, and Strieker and E lw orthy made a very plucky stand when all seemed lost in the second, adding 80 for the ninth w icket and saving the innings defeat. F or the winners L . G . Tapscott, Quaife, and L in g were the outstanding perform ers. L . G . T apscott and L in g added 98 for the second w icket, and the W arw ick shire man and L in g 102 for the third. Q uaife, by the w ay, h as expressed1 a very high opinion of the T apscott brothers and L in g, and it seems likely th at K im berley cricket w ill show som ething of its old strength in the near future with such men as these com in g on. The Currie Cup Tournament. T R A N S V A A L v. E A S T E R N P R O V IN C E . In spite of the fact th at T ransvaal a gain played a more or less experimental team , they were all over the Eastern Province in this match on the W anderers’ G round, Johannes burg, on March 22 and 24. L on gw orth won the toss for the v isito rs; but only Law rance, who hit eleven 4 ’s in his 54, did much for them . Glisson helped him to add 35 for the fourth w icket, and D elbridge (who h it E lw orthy, the “ g o o g ly ” bowler, out of the ground) 65 for the fifth. Le Roux and B aum gartn er bowled finely. F or T ransvaal Morkel played a brilliant innings of 84 (three 6 ’s, eleven 4’s ) ; Susskind batted in g re a t form for his 136, m a k in g his runs at the rate of one a minute, and h ittin g twenty-one 4 ’s ; and Le Roux hit out tremendously, scoring three successive 6 ’s off Glisson. Morkel and Susskind added 129 together. Law rance w as again the principal figure in the Province’s second, and again h e and D elbridge (51 for the fifth this time) made the best stand. T h e rest could do little or nothing w ith B aum gartner, whose analysis w a s 7 for 34; and T ransvaal won by an innings and 67 runs. D u rin g the match the ball w as eig h t times hit out of the ground. First Iunings. J. E. Brann, b Le Roux W. Harvey, c Cooper, b Le R o u x ................ 20 F. W. T his match, played at Port Elizabeth on March 29 and 31, was the last Currie Cup contest of the season— quite prob ably the last till 1915-6, as an E n glish team is expected in the sub-continent in 1913-4 and an A ustralian team in 1914-5, and hitherto the C urrie Cup Tournam ent has alw ays lapsed for a season in which South A frica entertained a team from ■overseas. Therei w as not much of note in the gam e. Western Province made a bad start, losing 3 w ickets for 10 runs in h alf an h o u r; but then Yeom an and C arsten s added 125 for the fourth in 150 m inutes, and three or four others made useful scores in faster time. Splendid fielding and good bow ling disposed of the home side before time on the Saturday for 71, eigh t batsmen failin g to score; and on Monday, w ith one man absent, they w ere tumbled out again for 93, only Glisson reaching double figures.
