130 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. A p r il 26, 1913. A R e u t e r ’ s c a b le from A d e la id e to the S p o rtin g L ife o f A p ril 18, states th at an unofficial cricket team w as to sa il from S yd n ey to V a n co u v er on M ay 5, and th at it w o u ld p ro b a b ly in clu d e B ard sley, C raw ford , M acartn ey, M ayn e, T rum p er, and W hitty. But, excep t th at it m akes the ch an ces o f the to u r’s com in g off seem p. 'trifle heavier, this is scarcely news. W ith only a fo rt n igh t o r so le ft before th e team must be banded, there o u g h t re a lly to b e m ore to tell. H. Gradidge &Sons, Manufacturers and Exporters of all requisites for Cricket, Lawn Tennis, Racquets, Squash Racquets, &c. N ew s has ju st reach ed me th at the m anagers o f the A u stralia n tour in Am erica w anted -a three thousand d ollar gu aran tee fo r a m atch at O ttaw a. In the expressive vern a cu la r of the great W estern C ontinent, the proposition was “ turned down c o ld .” C a lg a ry was asked one thousand d o lla rs; C alg ary offers five hundred, and as the team is bound to com e through th at city, exp ects to get a gam e at the p rice. see my fa c e ligh t up when C rickf . t arrives! ” ^ Artillery Place, Woolwich, S.E H a r r y T r o t t , interviewed in Sydney, on his return from the South Melbourne C.C.’ s tour in New Zealand, said that cricket had made wonderful strides in the Dominion since his last visit there sixteen years earlier, batting and fielding being beyond comparison better. B u t the bowling was not strong, he considered, and practically there were no fast bowlers. “ Many of the batsmen had got into the bad habit, once very prevalent in England, of getting their legs in the w ay of break balls.” Once !— if only th at were true ! A n excellent proposal th at Canterbury, quite the | strongest provincial team in the islands, should play the Rest of New Zealand at Easter, seems to have failed | to catch on. No doubt considerations of expense stood in the way. Otago were sending a team to Christchurch I for a return match. No match between Wellington ' and Canterbury has been played this season, the Welling- j ton authorities wishing for two matches and the Canter- b v iy Association foreseeing a difficulty in sending a team to the W indy City. Hawke’ s B ay and Auckland were to meet about E a s te r ; and there was also talk of matches between Hawke’ s B ay and Wellington, and between Wellington and Nelson. N e x t season it is expected that both Auckland and W ellirgton will tour South, thus inaugurating the | scheme which the N ew Zealand Cricket Association had hoped to start in 1912-3. J o h n S h ie l d s has b ten asked to captain Leicestershire again th is season, and I understand th at a fter all the team w ill have the assistan ce of K n igh t, whose coach in g duties w ill not in terfere w ith h ;s p layin g county cricket. W h eth er his p layin g county crick et w ill not in terfere very seriously with his coach in g duties is another matter. I h a v e received during th e last few w eeks any number o f congratulations on the im proved appearance o f C r ic k e t . W ill th ose w h o think so h ig h ly o f the p aper d o m e a favo u r ? It is a sim ple m atter to sh ow a cop y to a fello w cricket en th u siast; but I b elie ve th at in seven c a ses out o f ten it would mean ou r roping in another regu lar reader, fo r the p a p er recomm ends itse lf when seen.
