Cricket 1913

A p r il 19, 1913. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 123 Club Cricket Notes and Jottings. Since our last issue was published, the 1912 averages of Granville (Lee) have reached me ; and, though it is a trifle late now to be giving last season’s averages, the Granville C.C. is so old a friend of C r i c k e t th at they must be given, if not quite in full as far as space permits. F. J. Hall and S. Platt did fine work for the side as batsmen, and Eric Downey bowled in excel lent form, among his best performances being 6 for 22 v. Cyphers, 6 for 41 v. Eltham , and 5 for 36 v. M.C.C. Besides batting well, H. A. Dickens kept wicket most capably, catching 9 and stumping 6 opponents. It should be noted that the three centuries made for the club were all the work of one batsman, S. Platt scoring 118 v. Mr. Roberts’ X I., 114 v. the Wanderers, and 100 v. Bicldey Park. Among his other scores were 72, 69, 59, 54, and 51. Fifties were also scored by F. J. Hall (5), H. A. Dickens (3), A. A. Johnston (2), J. O. Anderson (2), and five other batsmen (one each— see “ Highest S co re” column). The A team's figures are unfortunately not quite complete, the score of the Gravesend match on Whit-Monday having been lost. Both teams had a majority of losses over wins ; but in the case of the first eleven it was but a small one, and their average per wicket (i8'68— 5,343 runs for 286 wickets) was only fractionally under that of their opponents (19-38— 4,768 runs for 246 wickets). HIGGS (Parson’ s Green C.C.). In this issue I am able to present a portrait of A. C. Higgs, the splendid all-round Cricketer who every season accomplishes such notable deeds for the Parson’s Green Cricket Club. He joined the Parson’s Green Club in 1905, and was its Hon. Secre tary, carrying out his duties in a most enthusiastic and successful manner. Previously he had played for Putney, with Hobbs, of Surrey. As a bowler he has been the chief match-winner of the P ar son’s Green Club, having taken over 600 wickets at a cost of 11 ru.is a-piece. He is a right-hand fast bowler, with an occasional slow off- break. He bowls over the wicket with a run of about 10 yards, and can keep a perfect length for the whole of the day. As a bat he also has done great things for the club, scoring over 4,000 runs with an average of 28, with 14, not-out, against Lauderdale in 1911, as his highest. His best bowling performance was against the Polytechnic, when he took 5 for 1, winning the Daily News' prize for the feat. Last season he was top of the Parson’s Green bowling averages. Besides being a good cricketer he is a thorough good sports man and good fellow. Colchester and East Essex held their annual meeting a t the George Hotel, Colchester, on March 10, when there was a good muster of members and friends, the latter including Mr. O. R. Borradaile (the Essex C.C.C.’s Secretary), and Mr. F. Round (Hon. Sec., Witham C.C.). The Mayor (Mr. W. Coats-Hutton) presided. The reports stated that, in spite of a regrettable, though slight, decrease in membership, the club had a more than satisfactory playing season; but from a financial point of view
