H is team scored w ell almost to a man, C ipriani him self and Constantine being specially prom inent. On th e second morning the M .C.C. started badly, and never retrieved th eir bad beginning. John, the fast bow ler, w h o w as le ft ou t of th e T rin idad team in the first m atch, w as in p a rticu la rly good form , and P ascall and R ogers also bow led well. A ll ou t for 87, th e visitors had to follow on. T h e y settled down to dogged p la y in order to save defeat. Jayn es stayed half-an-hour for 3 runs, H um phreys m eanwhile scoring nicely, and th e first w icket fell a t 35. H um phreys le ft a t 71, and a t call of time the to ta l w as 76 for 2. B u rton and F airbairn made a p lu ck y stan d a t th e ou tset of the th ird d a y ’s p lay, adding 83 in all, and ta k in g ab ou t 105 m inutes to do it. The third w ick et fell a t 159, th e fourth a t 162, and the fifth (R elf’s) a t 172. D oll helped S yd n ey Sm ith to add 45 for the sixth ; b u t it w as th e stand betw een the ex-Trinidad p layer and Dobson, a fte r A . F . Som erset had departed, which saved the side from defeat. T h e fielding was none too good, or Sm ith w ould h ave had to go earlier. He played a good and p atien t game, how ever, while Dobson scored more freely, and th e y added over 100 before Sm ith was stum ped in going ou t to Rogers. T h e m attin g w icket handicapped them , and th e y were g u ilty of an unusual num ber of errors in the field, while Ince, a left-hander, who p layed th e longest innings ever m ade again st an English team in th e islands, had his w ick et h it b y R elf a t 68 w ith o u t the bails bein g removed. T he visitors batted first, and H um phreys and F airbairn added 61 for the second w ic k e t; b u t the n ex t six w en t v e ry cheaply, and 8 were down for 115. T h e last tw o carried the to ta l to 202, D oll p layin g a cap ita l innings. Ince and Cum ber­ batch sent up 138 before the first w ick et fell. The latter was bow led b y a b all which he m ade no attem p t to p lay, shouldering his b a t ; given ou t b y the umpire, he appealed to the English captain, who allow ed him to continue his innings. H e had n ot stepped b a ck ; b u t his intention to leave th e b all alone w as obvious, and could be accounted for b y the leaves w h ich blew across the pitch, p u ttin g th e b a ts­ men off th eir strokes frequen tly. In le ttin g him resume, Som erset u nd ou btedly acted in sportsm anlike manner. T he th ird W est Indian partnership (Ince and Browne) added 67 runs, and the fou rth (Ince and Ollivierre) 80. A fte r th a t th e batsm en h it ou t and chanced everyth in g, and D o ll’s analysis reaped the benefit of these tactics. T h e tem p eratu re was 85° in th e shade, 111° in th e sun during th e W est Indian innings. T hough H um phreys p layed anoth er useful innings, th e tourists had 9 w ickets down for 102. T hen came a fine stand b y B urton , whose 66* w as ch aracter­ ised b y skill and patience, and th e cap tain ; th e y stay ed togeth er an hour and a half and added 89, v e r y n ea rly saving the gam e, as a t the fall of the last w ick et o n ly ab ou t tw e n ty m inutes rem ained for p lay. No one else did m uch ; b u t th e to ta l of 167 w as big enough, for after Moulder and H unter had sent up 34 for th e co lo n y’s first w icket, th e second w ick et fell a t 49, and the third, fourth, and fifth a t 50, and th ou gh th e cap tain and H inds offered some resistance, addin g 30 for th e eighth, th e close o f the innings found th e M .C.C.
