Splendid bow ling b y Sandm an and B en n ett, backed up b y th e keenest of fielding, disposed of the tourists for th e p a ltry to ta l of 80. W hen four C an ter­ bury w ickets had fallen for 73, there seemed little prospect o f a b ig score ; b u t P atterso n and R use played excellen t cricket, and added 113 for th e fifth in less than fifty m inutes. Sandman, a g rea tly im p roved b at, helped his skipper to add 63 for th e sixth n ex t d ay, and later on B en n ett and C arlton put on 70 for th e ninth. Reese was a t th e top of his form , took 140 m inutes o n ly to m ake his 130, and gave no chance. P atterson ’s 53 was e q u ally good, and th is p layer ou gh t to make a big nam e in th e near future. T he feature of South Melbourne’s second innings w as a stan d of 122 for th e first w icket b y M cCorm ack, p la yin g a defensive game, and Pu rvis, hittin g finely. A fte r th e y were parted the o n ly stand of an y len gth w as one of 44 b y T ro tt and D eas for th e eighth wicket. On the first and th ird d ays there were o n ly sm all attendances ; b u t on S atu rd ay th e gate-m on ey reached ^ 111— a good to ta l for N ew Zealand. It should be noted th at th e C an terb u ry innings adds u p 381, and the runs off the S outh M elbourne bow lers to ta l 348, while the batsm en ’s scores aggregate 304; b u t no correction could be obtained.
