Cricket 1913
M a r c h 15, 1913. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 99 WEST INDIES v. M.C.C. TEAM. The second Barbados match was followed immediately (on Thursday, February 6) by the first of the three games arranged with representative West Indian sides, though the Englishmen, who had been playing in heat such as they are not accustomed to -for six days out of the last seven (Sunday the only holiday), would naturally have preferred a day off. Several of them were suffering from strains. Whittington and Jaques came back into the M.C.C. team, and Docker and Dobson stood down. The West Indian side included five Barbadians, with Rogers, Pascall, and Cumberbatch from Trinidad, Layne from British Guiana, Richard Ollivierre from St. Vincent, and C. D. Phillips from Grenada. Somerset won the toss, and sent the other side in, the wicket being a trifle soft and likely to give the bowlers some help. Humphreys again bowled capitally, and had four of the first five wickets, which only realised 46. Browne joined | Tarilton, who, except for one unexpected six, which caused the crowd to roar applause, played defensively and was never comfortable, but helped to add 72 for the sixth wicket. At 139 Browne was out for a dashing 55, and the innings | closed for 167. Doll helped Whittington to send up 66 j for the first English wicket, and at call of time the total was j 101 for 1. Relf left next morning without addition to the score, and Whittington left at 143. He had given a couple of chances, but played good cricket otherwise. Razor Smith, promoted, left for a duck at 153. Burton was | playing really well, and he and Humphreys added 65 before the Yorkshireman was bowled. ' Sydney Smith also showed to advantage, and made the lion’s share of the 106 added by the last 5 wickets. Except for a fine effort of 77 by R. Challenor, the second West Indian innings was a poor show. Humphreys again bowled finely, and the fielding was magnificent. The best stand was 58 for the fourth wicket by Challenor and Tarilton. Layne had been taken ill, and could not bat. The visitors, left with only 15 to get for victory, lost three men, thus winning before lunch on the Saturday by 7 wickets. First innings. W est Indies. TEAM Bridgetown was left on Monday, February 10, by the Tagus, which dropped anchor at Port of Spain at daylight next morning. The representatives of Barbados (C. A. Browne, Gibbs, and Ince), Grenada (Phillips), and St. Vincent (Ollivierre) for the test match to be played in Trinidad accompanied the team. Layne had to stay behind, still unwell. There was a crowd on the wharf to welcome the visitors, and Sydney Smith, himself a Trinidadian, got a big reception. The first of the two matches with Trinidad began on Thursday, February 14. Razor Smith umpired, ■yvith him in that responsibility being Ormond Wallace, home for a holiday from Canada, where he is well known in the field. Fairbairn also stood down. Somerset took first innings on winning the toss. A wretched start was made, Humphreys and Whittington both being out with only, 12 scored. Before the second wicket fell Rogers, one of Trinidad’s best men, cut his hand severely in attempting a catch in the slip, and the English captain allowed J. N. Crawford, the old U.C.S. boy who was in, this country on holiday last year and played for the Hampstead Nomads, to take his place. Sydney Smith and Relf added 158 for the third wicket, both hitting freely. Relf’s 91 included a 6 and eleven 4’s, Smith’s 71 a 6 and seven 4’s. The Northants’ man gave three chances, one before he had scored. Doll and Burton added 50 for the fifth wicket. On the Friday morning the innings closed for 298, Small having a capital analysis. Trinidad cut up badly at first, 4 wickets (including those of Constantine and Andre Cipriani) being down for 34. Small and St. Hill added 29 for the fifth, and De Gannes arid Cumberbatch 46 for the seventh. In arrears of 156, Trinidad followed on when the third day’s play began, and before luncheon had lost 6 wickets for 106. Later De Gannes and Cumberbatch (as in the first innings) made a plucky stand, adding 63 for the eighth w icket; but the Englishmen were left with under 50 to get, and won by 8 wickets. M.C.C. Team.
