98 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. M a r c h 15, 1913. THE M.C.C. TEAM ’S TOUR. The R.M.S. Magdalena, carrying the M.C.C. Team captained by A. F. Somerset, reached Barbados on Monday, January 27, and, after the visitors had had some practice on the Kensington Ground at Bridgetown, the first match began on Thursday. BARBADOS v. M.C.C. TEAM. P. A. Goodman was too lame to play for Barbados, and H. B. G. Austin was absent from the .island, though it had been hoped that he would return in the Magdalena in time to play. Tarilton captained. The visitors left out M- H. C. Doll (who umpired) and D. C. F. Burton, Smith playing. Somerset won the toss, and a fair start was made, the first wicket producing 54 before Whittington .was bowled by a leg-break. Relf joined Humphreys, and 160 were added for the second wicket. Then George Challenor bowled the Kent man with a yorker ; Relf left 7 runs later ; and no one else did very much, all being out for 306. Both Humphreys and Relf batted really well, though neither played a perfect innings. Barbados had 14 up for no wicket at call of time. On Friday (January 31) R. Challenor and Tarilton carried the score to 84 before the former was run out. Tarilton left at 117, and George Challoner and Ince then made a long stand, adding 123 for the third wicket. The fourth fell at 321, Challenor succumbing to a yorker for a faultless 118. C. Allan Browne and W. O. Gibbs, fellow-members of the Spartan C.C., were now together, and remained till call of time, the total then being 403 for 4. Next day they took it to 404— 133 for the wicket— before Browne was out. The home side had two ends in view on this last day— to beat the 517 of R. S. Lucas’s team in 1895 (record total in a match in the West Indies against an English side) and to win the game. They accomplished both. Their batsmen forced the pa.ce, Gibbs hitting particularly well, and a declaration was made at 520 for 6. The first English wicket realised' 40 (Humphreys out), the second fell at 62 (Relf), the third at 66 (Whittington), .the fourth at 101 (Fairbairn), the fifth at 102 (Dobson), the sixth at 106 (Smith), and the seventh at 111 (Docker). A. C. Somerset now joined his. father, and these two put up a really good, and plucky resistance, several changes of bowling being tried before they were parted (through, A. C.’s attempting a short run— why did he ?) at 178. The end soon came after that. Fields bowled particularly well. B a r b a d o s B o w l e r s ’ A n a l y s is . O. M. R. VV. 4 55 First innings. M.C.C. TEAM. The second match began at Kensington on Monday, February 3. There were changes on both sides, D. C. F. Burton and M. H. C. Doll playing for M.C.C. instead of T. A. L. Whittington and A. Jaques, .while P.A. Goodman and Archer (N.), the latter the Wanderers C.C. groundsman, replaced L. F. Archer and S. M. Worme on the home side. Heavy rain had affected the wicket, and Tarilton, winning the toss, put the other side in. Except for Relf, who played a capital game in difficult circumstances, no batsman stayed lon g; and a struggle for runs lasting about an hour and a half only produced 65. Before lunch was taken a couple of Barbados wickets fell in less than a quarter of an hour ; and the sixth fell just after the English score had been equalled. But now the pitch had improved greatly, and with Tarilton and George Challenor together runs came .steadily, Challenor getting the bulk of them. The wicket had added 134 when he was taken in the slips for a chanceless 109. The captain and C. A. Browne put on 34 more before stumps were drawn, and on the second day they increased their partnership to 123 before Browne left for 61. The ninth wicket added 25, and the last exactly 100, Ince playing fine cricket for his 57*. Tarilton’s 157 was an innings of much merit, marked throughout by caution, but with many good strokes. Humphreys had by far. the best bowling figures. Only 4 byes were registered during the long innings—-strong testimony to the veteran wicket-keeper’s ability. With arrears of 382 against them, M.C.C. began badly. The wicket had been affected by more rain, it should be noted. Doll, Fairbairn, and Burton were all out with only 17 on the board. Sydney Smith and Relf 'added 47, and the Sussex man and Humphreys played out time on the second day— 99 for 3. Neither lasted very long on the third morning, and though B. P. Dobson and A. C. Somerset made useful scores, 9 wickets were down for ,205. An amazing stand followed. • Razor Smith joined his captain, who had been in for some time, and hit out in fine style, while Somerset, himself a hard hitter by nature, was content to play a steady game. Four followed four in quick'succes- sion, and, beginning before lunch, the pair were not parted until after the tea interval. Then Smith was out for 126, of 167 (easily a West Indian record) added for the last wicket. The captain carried his bat for 55, an innings of great value, marred by only one chance. Barbados, with all the best of the luck, thus won by an innings and ro runs. M.C.C. T e a m . First innings. M. H. C. Doll, c ancl b Archer Humphreys (E.), c R. Challenor, b Archer Relf (A.
