Played at Auckland on January 10 and 12 ; result, a draw. The Auckland side was not the strongest the province could put in the field, Sale, Brook-Smith, Oliff, Sneddon, Horspool and Cummings being all absentees; but it included several regular representative players. The N.S.W. men, the majority of whom play for Sydney first- grade clubs, more than held their own, however, and in their second innings McMullen and O’Neill added 270 runs for the second wicket. Grenier and Hemus made 101 for the second wicket in quick time when Auckland faced the task of getting 477 to win in 150 minutes. N.S.W. T each er s . First innings. 30 25 F. Barnes, b McMath F. On Saturday, January 12, an Auckland eleven met a team selected from the Wednesday Association’s clubs, the game being played on Eden Park, where the Auckland v. N.S.W. Teachers match was also in progress. The match was remarkable for a long stand made by G. Cummings, who used to play for Otago, and E. Horspool, both prominent provincial representatives. They came together at 67, and added 241 before they were parted. Cummings hit four 6’s, Horspool, who scored at a great pace, had twelve 6’s and nineteen 4’s. Not a single extra appears to have been given in Auckland’s innings. Cricket in the W est Indies. A u c k lan d . G. Cummings, c Sutton, b Joyce 115 1 R. C. Sommervell, not out — . This was a play-off in anticipation of a tie in the Barba dos Senior Cup Competition. The Pickwick C.C. had completed its programme, winning 3 matches, losing 1 drawing 2. Wanderers had won 2, lost 1, drawn 2 of 5 played, and had only Harrison College to meet— this match apparently being regarded as a certain win for them. The game began in December 7, but with only one wicket down rain intervened. A week later Pickwick resumed their innings, and lost P. A. Goodman at 10. Tarilton and Kidney then added 140. The former only gave one chance in his big score (at 105). No one else but Yearwood did any thing, and the innings closed for 227. On December 14, when the third day’s play took place, only 4 wickets fell. Two (including R. Challenor’s) were down for 37 ; G. Challenor and H. W. Tnce played cautiously at first, but scored faster afterwards. They added 240. Ince’s innings was faultless. A t call of time the score was 297 for 4. On December 21 Abrams left at 347, the fifth wicket having added 64. A t 387 G. Challenor was out for 195, made without a mistake. The catch by which Worme dismissed him was a really fine one. Kaye helped Mason to add 117. With A. D. Ince partnering Mason, the West Indian record total (529 by British Guiana v. Shepherd’s Team) went by the board. The score was 566 for 7 at the end of the day. On January 4 several of the Pickwick men were absent, but substitutes fielded, and the apparently endless game went on. Ince was out at 600— -106 for the eighth wicket. Phillips and Mason added 49 for the last, and the latter carried his bat for a fine innings of 151. Pickwick, 446 in arrear, batted again. Tarilton and L. T. Yearwood put up 64 for the first wicket. Then Kidney joined Tarilton, and 124 more were put on without further loss. On January 11 these two carried their partnership to 239, when Tarilton was out for his second century of the match. Kidney left at 309, and Badley at 326; but P. A. Goodman and Wiles stayed till call of time, having added 70. The game was then abandoned, the Barbados Cricket Committee needing the ground, in preparation for the visit of the M.C.C. Team. In the course of the game 24 wickets realised 1,296 runs— average 54 per wicket ; there were six centuries, three in one innings ; one batsman twice topped the hundred, and another was only 5 short of a 200 score ; and Tarilton and Kidney were together while 379 runs were scored (140 in first innings, 239 in second). Unfortunately the complete bowling analysis is not available ; but that of the Wanderers’ innings is given as a curiosity. First innings. P ickw ick . Second innings. P. H. Tarilton, c and b G.
