SOUTH MELBOURNE. Fresh from a capital victory over Otago at Dunedin, but still without Lusk, Canterbury put up a good game in this match (at Christchurch on December 31, January 1 and 2), but could not beat Trott and his men. W. R. Patrick’s century was the feature of the home side’s first innings, and T. Carlton helped him in a good stand for the eighth wicket. In the second innings, though the wicket was still good, no one but young Hickmott seemed able to do anything with the bowling of Kyle and Giller ; and it was a really great feat for a schoolboy to carry his bat through an innings of 91 for 43, especially after seeing his first three partners dismissed with only one run on the board. Kenny was top scorer in each innings for South Melbourne, who had to fight hard for victory. , Going in to make 145 to win, they lost Scott at 4 and Sykes at 8 ; and after the fourth wicket had fallen at 118, the fifth went at 121, th esixth at 127, and the seventh at 132. Harry Trott was the next man, and he made 12 of the 13 still required, Gray keeping up his wicket meanwhile. First innings. C a n te r b u r y . Second innings. E. R. Caygill, run out W. Wellington challenged for the Plunket Shield, which Auckland wrested from Canterbury last season, and met the holders at Auckland on New Year’s Day in .showery weather. C. G. Wilson, who captained the visitors, has always scored well when representing Otago against the northern province, and much was hoped from him. He was top scorer in the first innings, when Phillips played a very dogged game for 40, and others made useful additions to the total. Auckland had 2 down for 58 at the close of the first day’s play. On January 2 L. G. Hemus, their captain and crack bat, carried his score to 85. He was in 3J hours, and only gave one chance— of stumping. With arrears of 78 to make up, Wellington had a disastrous period at the end of the second day. They lost 5 for 11, all falling to Oliff, the little Auckland bowler, who only had three runs scored from him. He was carried shoulder-high off the field. Next morning he took another wicket without a run, and at that stage had taken his last 9 wickets for 3— three at the end of the first innings for o, and 6 at the beginning of the second for 3— incidentally performing the hat trick ! The colts Robinson and Grimmett played up very pluckily, and Saunders surprised every one by hitting up a decent score ; but the leeway could not be made up, and Auckland won easily. First innings.
