Cricket 1912
Nov. 16, 1912. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OE THE GAME. 577 Sutton had not nearly so good a record as in m ost previous seasons the first XT. losing two m ore matches than they won, and the half-day X I.s having a bare m ajority of one win. But three of the first X I.s defeats were by such narrow margins as 2, 4 and 6 runs. The bowling was not up to the usual Sutton strength. The right hand of R . M. Bell, the side's popular skipper, has by no means lost its cunning ; for the eighth time in eleven seasons he took over 100 wickets for the club. But there was no one to give him regular support, though others did very well at times. The batting figures are very solid, and the club is well off in this respect, at least. The brothers Jewell, J. G. M. Bell, P. R . Waterer, and J. M. Williamson all did fine work for the first X I., while L. Jackson has splendid figures for the second. Tw o of the club’s young players, Donald Knight and R . D. Clark, figured with success in county cricket. SUTTON C.C. : 1912. First XI. : played, 33 ; won, 14 ; lost, 16 ; drew, 11. Half-day X I. : played, 30 ; won, 12 ; lost, 11 ; drew, 7. The Trojans— whose membership includes practically all the Hampshire County amateurs, and who consequently can put in the field an eleven which might represent the Gentlemen of Hants— had a very successful cam paign on the whole, in spite of half-a-dozen abandoned matches, including two with the Hants Rovers which were among the best on their card. The strength of the team fluctuates greatly, of course ; only H . G. M. Barton, H. A. Haigh Smith, W . K . Pearce, W . H. Pike, and A. Jaques played in more than ten innings, the first-named pair being quite the run-getters of the side, while Haigh Smith and Jaques took between them more wickets than any five other bowlers. Seven centuries were scored for the club, P. D. Pank having the hard luck to fall one short of 200 v. South W ilts, while H. A. Haigh Smith ran into three figures against the M.C.C. and the Ordnance Survey, M. T. Smith v. Bannister Court, and Captain E. I. M. Barrett and G. N. Bigncll v. Hampstead The Trojans aggregated 6,317 for 272 wickets (average 23-2), their opponents 5,207 for 314 (average 16*5), a sufficiently-marked advantage. TH E T R O J A N S : 1912. G .W .R . did pretty well on the whole, having a m ajority of wins over defeats, while their average per wicket for and against seems to make them out worth a bigger majority. One feature of their season deserves notice. P. W . Badge and W . R . Morris were their leading batsmen ; but after them com e half-a-dozen or more men any one of whom was likely to make a useful score at any time, but no one of whom except P. C. W right was at all consistently successful. But I believe G .W .R .’s strongest point was out cricket. It m ight be argued that beyond A. Grugeon and C. E. H oneyball they had little bowling ; but 1 d on 't think this is necessarily correct— the fact of the matter is that those tw o did so well that they seldom needed help. It is evident that Morris could have taken a bigger share in the attack if necessary. The veteran F. K . H oneyball kept wicket well, and the fielding was generally good. The second X I. played 18 matches, winning 4 and losing 9. G R E A T W E S T E RN R A IL W A Y C.C. : 1912. Matches played, 23 ; won, 11 ; lost, 8 ; drew, 4.
