Cricket 1912
O ct . 12, 1912. CEICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 547 properly speaking; only a few men were regularly available, and until this is remedied the side will never take a high place. It is not the fault of the secretaries ; they do what men may do. In such a disastrous campaign as Suffolk’s in 1912 the record of the skipper, H. L . W ilson, stands out red-lettered. He is at the top of the second- class batting averages, and is the only m an who made two centuries in m inor county cricket during the season. But even he was absent som etim es. Penfold did creditable work as a bowler. S u r r e y II. had a strong batting side, with Goatly, Spring, Abel, Sandham, A. W . F. Butty, G. W . Palmer, and occasionally C. T. A .W ilkinson and F. W. Gillespie ; but the bowling was not nearly as good as tho batting. As the team came through the season without a defeat outright, no one can well com plain, how ever; and perhaps the criticism that most of the crack bats are really first eleven m en— though there may not be room for them in the first eleven— will be held beside the mark. W i lt s h i r e , apart from an unexpected win over Bucks and a rare uphill fight with Surrey II. at the Oval, did little of any note. Newman owes his batting figures almost entirely to a big score in the Oval gam e; and I fancy the veteran captain, A. M. Miller, is still the best bat on the side. The bowling was quite respectable, Overton, Newman, M itchell, and W . B . C. Laverton all doing good work, and only six of the twenty sides have better figures in the “ average per wicket against ” colum n than W ilts. Of N o r th a m p to n s h ir e II., W a r w ic k s h ir e II., and Y o r k s h ir e II., each engaging in only a couple of matches, it is unnecessary to say anything. In the averages which follow, the figures of m inor county players for the M.C.C. against any m inor county are included. Of these 24 scores only 20 were in the Championship, those of Abel, Goatly, L . E . H olland, and Kilner being made in extraneous matches. In the batting averages which follow everyone who played ten innings or m ore is included, with those who played five or more completed innings and had a double figure, and a few who only just fell short of the required standard. This leaves out scores of players; but as none of them figured m any times or with any real measure of success perhaps their om ission may be regarded as immaterial.
