Cricket 1912

StfPT. 28, 1912. CBICKET: A WEEKLY BECOKD OF THE GAME. 535 H. G . Garnett, R. B. Heygate, Capt. K. 0 . Goldie, E. J. Radcliffe, J. H . B . Lockhart, R . A. Young, R. T. Crawford, D. M. Evans, W . S. A . Brown, Trem lin, and Davis. Some of these will no doubt reappear ; but one fears that most of them must be relegated to the long list of past players as far as first-class cricket is concerned. MacLeod, Smith, and Trem lin were kept out of the field by illness, and Garnett, Goldie, and Evans by absence abroad, however. Few new reputations were made, though the list of new players is a trem endously long one. R. B. Lagden, F. R. R. Brooke (who had played in the best cricket in India previously, so that he could scarcely be considered a new hand at the big game), N. Haig, J. N. Fraser, and J. S. F. Morrison were among those who did b est; on the ground of prom ise rather than of actual performance this season one looks to G. B. Davies, G. M. Louden, J. Tasker, B. D. Hylton- Stewart, the third R elf, and three quite youthful players in Geary, Chester, and Maurice Tate as likely to do good work in the future. Those m entioned last year as of considerable prom ise did not altogether bear out the prophecy this ; but 1912 was a rough season for a youngster who had to play for his place, and if he failed he did so in good com pany. The table which follow s shows som ething of the representation of the various county sides. The figures are for all m atches; and this season, of course, every county played at least two matches outside the cham pionship, owing to the fixtures with the Colonial teams. Seven of the 16 played no more than tw o ; Essex, Kent, M iddlesex, and Notts had three each, Hants, Lancashire, and Surrey four each, Sussex five, Yorkshire eight. County. Matches played. Jones, Payton, Braund. Vine, Charlesworth, and Quaife can claim a full three years’ record, as they all go back through 1910 also. Farther than that I have not the records at hand just now. W arren Bardsley was the only man who played in every match for either of the Colonial sides. A v e ra g e s . Abel (W . J .)... Alletson (E .)... Altham , H . S. Arnold (E . G.) A still (W . E .)
