Cricket 1912

530 CEICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. S e p t 28. 1912. West Kent Wanderers: 1912. Standing (L eft to R ight) : H. L eighton (Um pire), H. E. G urnsey , W. H. L awrence , J. G. W ard , R . K aye , W. H . M aoos , G. F. H owell , sen. (Hon. See.), W. Y oungs . S ittin g: H. W aller (Vice-Captain), J. H. L ongman (Captain), A. E. Lugg. K neeling: G. D arvell , W . D. M yers . Front R ow (S itting): G. F. H owell , jun., G. E arl (Scorer), A. G. IT. W illis . havoc as a bowler, and that worthy veteran, A. J. Trollope, of Brixton, was top scorer for the winners. T he good old club goes on prospering ; and I learn from T . G . Carter, their energetic secretary, that he expects to have an even stronger fixture list next year. R iver Plate House drew a twelve-a-side gam e with the Malden W anderers, F. C. Buckeridge’s 48 being a long way top score of the match, while N. D. T . Oliver again bowled well. Derrick Wanderers lost to Northbrook. J. Leem ing and E . C. Bowe batted well, and H. Simpson and A. H . Fish bowled effectively for the winners. B . T . Childs had a capital analysis for the hom e side (7 for 6 3 ); but H . B. Bennie was the only m an who could make many runs, and there was no real stand after the fall of the second wicket. Beulah lost their last m atch of the season, too. Aptus had 6 down for 44, but finished up with 138, thanks to Curd (whose 45 included 9 boundaries) and f-rnith, and then put out Beulah for 76, of which Clegg aud Parker made 61 between them . Beulah II. went down to Charlotte in a m atch of very small scoring. Beulah did very well indeed on the whole, and though the batting averages are lower than in 1911 tbe first half-dozen men have very substantial figures. Mathiesen, the secretary, made most runs and heads the table ; he .never wastes tim e at the wickets, and his brisk hitting has often been of great use to the side when other m en have failed. Tufnell has done fine all-round work, and the club is lucky in the possession of four bowlers who could take among them nearly 250 wickets at an average cost of 8 per wicket. B EU L AH C.C. : 1912. Their batting was strong, six men averaging 20 and over in Saturday games (to which alone the averages given below refer), and their bowling perhaps even stronger, B uxton and H . A. Clarke doing fine work in match after match. W ith a skipper like the popular “ Freddy ” Grimes and a secretary like the equally popular William Lyon, the club is guided wisely and strongly; and W oouhouse Boad must be one of the plesantest places visited by any opposing team. I am very glad to know that at tbe wind-up supper on Saturday evening C r ic k e t came in for special m ention when the toast of “ The Press ” was proposed, and it is g o o d to hear that the paper has been so heartily appreciated by the A. and F .
