Cricket 1912

504 CRICKET: A WEEKLY and E . Cogdon 4 for 30. Hubert Brooks left early; but the skipper, C. Brooks 1 27*), and J. M. Russell (37*) then hit off the runs. Sunderland have now beaten eveiy team in the division at least once this season ; and if they defeat Chester-le-Street next Saturday will equal their highest form er total of points— 37 in 1908. Durham City lacked A dam son, Maynard, and others, but had the best of a drawn gauie with W earm outh. E. H indson (f>6), “ T ot ” Prince (28), and W . F. Parrington (22) were chief contributors to W earm outh’s 202 F or the City H endren made a capital century and F. Scott 42*, and they were 152 for 2 when rain put a stopper on proceedings. Chester- le-Street (J. K. Bewick 55*) easily beat Philadelphia— 106 for 4 to 66. Thackeray ha l 6 for 36, Jas. Bewick 4 for 25, for the winners. The m ost exciting game of the day was that between H endon and South Shields. W . H arrison, the skipper, made just half of H endon’s total o f 114. H arry’s 6 wickets took his total to 113, a record for the League. Shields, thanks m ainly to T. Coulson and Harry (30 each) got to 122. after an anxious time. Burnm oor (J. S. Rutherford 52) made 118 v. Seaham H arbour, for whom Dickins bowled well. C. W . Pollock (52*) and F. Rowell (27*) had taken the H arbour’s score to 84 unseparated when rain stopped the game. Jam es’s 77 for W h it burn was the outstanding feature of that side’s drawn game with E ppleton. Next week I hope to present portraits of C. Brooks, the Sunder land captain, and M orris, the club’s great m atch-winning bowler. In the Tyneside League som e good individual performances were done. J. S. N esbit hit a 6 and thirteen 4’s in his 92 for St. George’s v. Backworth P e rcy ; S. G . R obson made 58 for Tynedale v. North Durham ; George Milne took 7 for 10 for Benwell H ill v. R yton, C. M. Skinner 7 for 35 for St. George’s v. Backworth Percy, R . W . Clark 5 for 38 for South Northumberland v. Old Novocastrians, and Richardson 5 for 32 for R yton v. Benwell H ill. W allsend had an exciting game with Benwell, winning by 4 runs only. In South W ales circles Swansea pulverised Llanelly. The totals were 33 (Percy Rees 20), Maxwell taking 5 for 7, Creber 5 for 25, and 257, E . A. Billings scoring 79, Maxwell 52, B ancroft 46. Briton Ferry played a draw with Neath. Gwyn Thom as made a century for the visitors, and T . A . L. W hittington 48. Their total was 208, Arundale (whose benefit it was) taking 7 for 74. Briton Ferry replied with 165 for 8 (Arundale 61*). Next season A. S. W ebb (of Plym outh Merthyr) will be engaged at Briton Ferry in addition to Arundale. Penarth and Cardiff played a draw, no one making many runs. Newport (181 for 3— Diver 67*, Brewer 39*) easily beat Barry (57). Panteg played Cardiff A lpha for Sm ith’s benefit. The Cardiff side put up 148 for 6. Panteg could only score 80, of which Evans made 37* in splendid style. Gibson bowled capitally for the winners. H ow much one fam ily m ay do for a club is well exemplified in the case of the King’s County (Ireland) C.C. Away from Dublin, Cork, and Belfast, cricket is som ething of an exotic in the Emerald Is!e, and what this particular club would do without the Goodbody’s it is difficult to imagine. J. Barrington G oodbody totalled 355, and averaged 37, R . M. totalled 225 and averaged 20, J. E ., who only played 4 innings, averaged 2 3 ; J. B. took 55 wickets at 11, and R . M. 13 at 12. In all the G oodbody’s made more than a third of the runs from the bat for the club, and took nearly half the wickets, as the averages in the “ Irish Field ” show. On M onday Messrs. H . D . Swan and E . R . Pallett captained elevens in what has becom e an annual fixture at Colchester. Swan’s team were real hot stuff, and won easily. A. Hollender (6 for 38) and O. S. Nelthorpe (4 for 19) put out the old Reptonian’s eleven for 65, only R. R. Surridge (Felsted) staying long. Swan’s team run up 227. No one failed to score, and the R ev. A. J. Fenn, H ollander, Nelthorpe, and F. L . Titchm arsh all played good innings. Overseas Cricket. T h e M e tr o p o lita n D is tr ic t L e a g u e b e a t t h e N .Y . a n d N .J .
