Cricket 1912

456 CEICKET : A WEEKLY EECOED OF THE GAME. AUGUST 24, 1912. The Tour of the Philadelphia C.C. Our visitors from over the A tlantic started their tour at Eeigate on Bank Holiday, and thanks to the brothers Conyers and H. L . Clark pretty easily defeated Reigate Priory, who could only make 79. Gerald Conyers took 8 for 3 1 ; his brother J . R . made 32, and H . L . Clark scored 30. It is rather am using to note, by the way, that the Conyers, who hail from Bermuda, are accepted as genuine Americans by almost every journalist who spills ink over the tour. On Tuesday the m atch with Sutton had barely begun, Sutton batting, when heavy rain stopped it. The game with the Royal A rtillery, which should have been a two-day match, was finished off on Wednesday, the splendid all-round form of Gerald Conyers dom inating the play. He made 62 (the next highest score in the m atch was 24) and took 7 for 9 and 8 for 42. The game was twelve aside, and the gunners made 29 and 10 5 to Philadelphia’s 110 and 25 for 2. No one but Conyers reached 20 for the tourists. The Stoke Poges club on Friday included such cracks as R . H. Twining, J . F . Ireland, and A. J . E van s. Ireland made 64 of their total of 90. This time Gerald Conyers had 7 for 50. .J. L . E vans (70), J . P . Dornan (28), and C. S. M itchell (19) were the double figure scorers in Philadelphia’s innings of 119 . On Saturday a m atch of sm all scores, interrupted by rain, with M itcham ended in a draw. A t the beginning of their second week the tourists encountered defeat for the first tim e. Mr. J . R . Tylden’s X I., at M ilstead, near Sittingbourne, was a strong one, including G. J . V. W eigall, C. T. A. W ilkinson, C. E . H atfeild, Goatly, Preston, and other well-known players. They made 1 1 2 (A. F . Leach-Lew is 36, W ilkinson 23) and 246 for 9, dec. (W ilkinson 82, W eigall 58, H atfeild 32*, Goatly 30) to 73 (J. H . Mason 15 , highest scorer) and 15 3 (Gerald Conyers 3 1 , J . L . E vans 29, J . R . Conyers 24) by the P h il adelphians. Gerald Conyers had 8 wickets in the first innings, 4 in the second. On Wednesday and Thursday in last week they played the Mote. Mason won the toss for the first time, and the Philadelphians (T. F . D ixon 36*) put up the good total of 18 1 on a slow wicket. A. B anks (7 for 15) and G. 0 . Conyers (3 for 33) disposed of the Mote for 49 ; but, following on, the home side did much better, aggregating 200 , of which the last wicket was responsible for 55, Groves hitting out lustily and making seven 4’s in his 39. The visitors made the runs required for the loss of 3 wickets. Groves took 9 for 85 in their first innings, and up to the end of this m atch had secured 104 wickets for the club, which is a record for a Mote bowler in one season. . A t Folkestone the toss was again lost, and the Americans suffered a heavy defeat. Only J . H . Mason in the first and J . L . E van s in the second innings could make any runs worth mentioning for them, whereas L . T . Driffield, the Cambridge blue, A. C. Edw ards, the Hon. J . S . R . Tufton, and others all scored well for the home side. Gerald Conyers was ineffective in the first innings, but took 6 wickets in the second. First=class Batting Averages. A. C. Johnston C. B. Fry W.
