The Second Eleven played 7, won 6, lost 1, and averaged 12*46 per wicket against 8*27 by their opponents. Cricket in Scotland. B y H a m ish . Once again did rain spoil our cricket programme and cause many games to remain unfinished. Perhaps in no previous season has there been such a large percentage of draws, a result m ainly due to wet weather. For this reason also wickets have seldom favoured the bowler, as he has generally had to wdrk with a wet ball, and the fielders likewise have been at a disadvantage. The Championship of the Scottish Counties was settled at Alloa when rain brought the match between Clackmannan County and Perthshire to a conclusion after half-an-hour’s play, during which time Clackmannan had scored 26 for no wicket. Perthshire are deservedly Champions, but about the only real satisfaction they can extract from the fact is that they are the best side North of the Forth and Clyde. Forfarshire, their great rivals in the competition—and out of it — had scored 129 for 5 wickets (R. G . T ait 84) v. Stirling County by the lunch interval, at which point the match had to be abandoned. Thus for the second time Gooder, the Stirling pro., had his benefit spoilt. In Fifeshire Kirkcaldy, 137 for 9 (Lilley 50*) and Dunfermline, 76 for 2, played a draw ; but at Burntisland the town club beat the Brunswick after the latter had closed their innings— 108 for 2 to 100 for 6 . Some interesting matches were carried through in the west, and perhaps the best of the lot was the one at Partick between West of Scotland (80) and Uddingston (79). Joh n s returned to the West’s side after m any weeks’ absence and took three wickets for 18. H. Earnshaw had 4 for 14, and W. M. Dunn 3 for 24. The West had only 80 to get, but they had to struggle hard till H . C. Barbour (32*), who played a splendid innings in the circumstances, gave them a well-earned victory by a single run. Amid great enthusiasm Barbour was carried shoulder high to the pavilion. The victory was really gained by the fielding, in which department the W est gave a high-class exhibition. Drumpellier again placed two elevens in the field, and emerg d with credit. The stronger opposed Greenock at Greenock, the result being a draw—Greenock, 207 (J. B . W alker 77, J . H. Gordon 5 1*), Drumpellier, 147 for 6 (D. McBean 49). The home side had all the best of the game with E ast Stirlingshire, who were defeated by 148 to 34. For Drumpellier W . W. Thomson and C. Denholm had five wickets apiece for 12 and 14 runs respectively. Even with their double fixtures Drumpellier have so far only suffered defeat ouce this season, and that in their opening match against Kelburne. Leith Caledonian (145) opposed Kelburne (163 for 4) at Paisley and lost. F or Kelburne W. J . Casford (57) and Shingler (74*) were in fine form , while for the visitors A. J . Reid had 46*. The match between Clydesdale (130) and Poloc ( 1 1 1 for 9) was a keen tussle. W . Linton of Poloc had scored a century in each of the last three matches at Titwood and, though the sequence was broken in this instance he had the highest individual total of the game, 42. Polloc appeared to have the upper hand till Beardsworth, whose benefit match it was, performed the “ hat trick,” and they were lucky, after all, to escape with a draw. There were only two matches of any importance in Edinburgh. The Grange played their second la 9 t game when they easily overcame Clarendon—204 for 6 to 97. The Scottish Union Secretary, S. C. Freem an, collected 122. Along with D. M. Wood (53) he helped to add 150 for the fifth wicket. Keene had 7 wickets for 40 and H. J . Stevenson 3 for 15 . Stewart’s College F . P . (123) and Stenhouse- muir (63 for 1) played a draw at Inverleith. For Stew art’s J . B . Turnbull (40*) and E . M. Elder (31) added 8 1 for the 9th wicket and for Stenhousemuir J . Graham captured 8 wickets for 33. Selkirk and G ala, both undefeated, met in their return fixture under the auspices of the Border League. A large gathering assembled round the boundary at Philiphaugh and saw Gala rmerge narrow victors after a keen fight—Selkirk 116 ; G ala 12 1 for 8 . G ala are now favourites for tue championship. The other Border League match between Hawick (89 for 3) and St. Boswells (73 for 4) ended in a draw. For Hawick Smith had 50* and for the visitors Lord Whitchester, the eldest son of the E a rl of Dalkeith, hit up 35. The R oyal High School F .P . were at Peebles, where they just managed to escape with a draw—Peebles County 148 ; Royal High School 93 for 9. W. H . Thorburn, who, in the probable absence of M. R. Dickson, m ay be asked to captain the Scottish side in Ireland, was top scorer with 36. Royal H igh School have had two or three lucky last wicket draws this season.
