Cricket 1912

A ugust 3, 1912. CEICKET : A WEEKLY EECOED OF THE GAME. for the winners. W altham stow pushed Ilford hard. They could only make 72, G. M. Louden bowling in great form (9 for 30) ; but one after another the Ilford cracks (Spelling absent, by the way) went down till tbe last pair were together with runs still wanted. Bnt W . 0 . Field and J. H . Gathercole proved themselves good at need. They not only knocked off the few required, but took the total to 111 before Field got out, the stumper carrying his bat for 35. L ondon Scottish declared at 249 for 7 at Acton against M ill H ill Park, a long stand for the fourth wicket by A . H . Bead (88) and H . C. H odgson (73) accounting for the bulk of the runs. C. E. Dalton played a fine innings for the home side, who had no difficulty in drawing the game. Arlington and Leytonstone’s match with W ickford was another draw. G. W inm ill and M. N icholls sent up 126 before the hom e side’s first wicket fe ll; the innings was declared at 179 for 4 ; the visitors replied with 112 for 7, J. Miles and Harold Halse doing best. I hear of two victories, each by a single run, on Saturday. Spartans beat Lauderdale at Chingford— 60 to 59. About this match I have no details, but I am in a better position as to the great fight between Albemarle and Friern Barnet and W alham Green. The visitors were without H . W . W eston— whom a northern paper describes as “ a left-hander of no special batting m erit,” which is surely a libellous statement. They got rid of A. & F. B ., H. T. Clarke top scorer, for 105, Dwyer taking 9 for 50. But the wicket was very queer after rain, and B uxton’s slows wrought bavoc. Man after man fell to them ; but m eanwhile the score crept up. No. 11 arrived with three wanted for victory. One was scored. Then Buxton clean bowled the latest com er. Bravo, B u xton ! N ine for 29 in an innings of 104 is good enough to be going on with. On W ednesday, be it noted, A. & F . B. had beaten North London by two runs. Tw o victories in a week, with a gross m ajority of three ! Southgate and M arlborough Blues had a well-fought game, the form er only winning by 33 runs in a gross total of 447. The Bev. A . M . Bashford, who has played for Middlesex, was top scorer for Southgate with 53, and C. Saville and O. S. Jenkins each made over 40 for the visitors. Brixton very easily beat Cheshunt and District, thanks chiefly to E . C. Carrington (50), B . Taylor (49), and G. W. Clegg’s fine bowling. Greville went under to West Herts, always a difficult side to beat. E . S. H ousehold’s 60 was top score of the m a tch ; L . B . Keelan made 52 and O. E . Dunn 41 for tbe losers. Greville's second string were heavily defeated by Brondesbury II, for whom B. B. Davis knocked up 87. Biver Plate House, who do not often lose, suffered a narrow defeat—20 runs— at the hands of Malden Wanderers. E . O. Drabble bowled w ell for B .P .H ., and E . F. W. Fricker, F . C. Buckeridge, W . C. W heatley, and D. C. Cooke batted well enough to have ensured victory had not the rest failed so completely, the other seven only aggregating 15 am ong them . F or Forest H ill II. v. Sutton II. that old warrior, W . B. W illiam s, did some great hitting. In one over he hit 32— four 6’s, two 4’s, which were exactly the figures of L . G. Kirkpatrick for Hampstead Nomads v. St. Bart’s last week— but one must not accuse W . B. W . of plagiarism. Forest H ill II., with 213 for 6 against 144, partially avenged the defeat sustained by the first team at Sutton. Another second eleven which was going strong on Saturday, and evidently has some very hefty players, is H eathfield’s. E . W . Stanger and W . E . Justice each put up between 80 and 100 ; the innings was declared at 260 for 6 ; and Crofton Park II. were dismissed for 140, B . G. Davis taking 6 for 30. Probably the best innings, almost certainly the hardest hit one, of Saturday’s cricket in Sussex, was that of the old Malvernian, O. W . W right, whose 109 (in a total of 188) for Seaford v. Lewes Priory included three 6’s and thirteen 4 ’s. H is side won by the narrow margin of 9 runs. Mayfield, still unbeaten, defeated Hailsham by 140. After two wickets had gone cheaply (Kirby’s one of them), E . T . D. Coppar-d and W . B. Keywood made a good stand of 96 for the third, and thenceforward Mayfield were always on top. East Grinstead beat Hayward’s H eath by 61, C. G. de Bougem ont making 64, and the H on. Brian Butler 56 for the winners. Horsham ran up 285 for 8 v. Bedhill, and won by 126. H . L . W ilson’s third century of the week included one 5 and seventeen 4’s. Littlehampton v. H ampshire Bovers produced a fine crop o f runs— 534 for 15 wickets. Arthur C ollins, the old Sussex player, made 99 and C. E . Mordaunt 83 for Littleham pton, whose reply to 257 was 277 for 5. Steyning defeated E ast Sussex County Staff at the Dripping Pan, Lewes, by 29, Herbert Flowers carrying his bat through the winners’ innings for 52, and B obert Breach’s lobs securing 5 wickets. The scratch team won by 10 wickets in the two-day match between Mr. E . E . F ox’s X I. and the Blue Mantles at Hastings. B . K, Simms and A. W . Boberts each topped the century for the winners, and Captain Stanley scored 81. In Blue Mantles’ second innings W . Bacon hit up 52 (ten 4’s) in 25 minutes.
