A u s t b a l ia n s . — This was quite a spectators’ m atch ; and for once in a way there was a goodly muster of spectators to witness it, an unusual thing at H ove nowadays. T o start with, Jennings and Kelleway sent up 83 for the first wicket in 70 minutes. Bardsley and Macartney added 99 for the third in an hour, Minnett (who was brilliantly caught by Chaplin when nicely set) and Macartney 46 for the fifth, and Gregory and Macartney 57 for the sixth in 40 m inutes. M acartney’s was a superb innings. Som e of his strokes through the slips were positively audacious; yet all were made with such certainty that there was no possible suspicion of fluke about them . H e made his runs in 150 m in utes; his only chance was at 122; he hit twenty-eight 4’s. Friday’s play was every bit as good as Thursday’s. Instead of Macartney we had the Jam, who batted 165 minutes, with one bit of luck at 56, drove with great power, and hit twenty-two 4’s. Albert B elf, bar one mistake, batted as well as ever he did in his life, and helped his captain to add 107 in 75 minutes. But the biggest hitting of the day was done by Fender, who made 69 in 80 m inutes, including a fine 6 and twelve 4’s. H e was in when the Jam was run out, but was in no way to blame for the m ishap. When Sussex looked certain to head the Colonial score, M cLaren came on again, and in one over clean bowled Fender, Street and H ollow ay— but in the case of the Cantab with a no-ball. A n over or two later he sent Cox’s stumps reeling, and thus took the last 3 wickets for 2 .runs. On the last day the free scoring was continued, Jennings left at 11; but at lunch the Australian total was 171 for 1. Kelleway had hit three 4 ’s in succession off Vine. Directly the gam e was resumed he left, his 63 having occupied 2 hours, and his partnership with Macartney having realised 160. Macartney com pleted his second century of the match. H e was out at 223, after batting 140 minutes, with twenty 4’s— another splendid innings, though perhaps a shade below his 142 in quality. H e was m issed at 89 (wicket) and 116 (extra cover). Matthews and Gregory added 68 for the fourth wicket. There was no further stand, and with the little Victorian out at 338 for 93 (95 minutes, a 5, thirteen 4’s), the innings was declared. A finish was out of the question, of course. Vine and Bobert B elf put up 89 for the first wicket in 50 minutes, and stumps were drawn at 6 w ith two down for 101. A l l I b e l a n d v . S o u t h A f r ic a n s . — The Irish side did not, after all, include either Dillon or W hitty, though the latter was anxious to play. In view of the test match on M onday, no doubt, the A us tralian managem ent very rightly refused to let him go. From the outset the Afrikanders were on top. Their new bowler, Taylor, got rid very quickly of four of the best Irish bats, and the whole_ side collapsed for 108. After Taylor and Strieker had departed, Tancred
