Cricket 1912
J u l y 13, 1912. CEICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF TIIE GAME 331 bowlers’ figures by way of counterweight; Knutton, 7 for 13 , Bradford v. Sheffield United ; Oyston, 7 for 13 , Leeds v. H alifax ; Judson, 7 for 19, Keighley v. Brighouse; Wardley, 7 for 26, Wakefield v. O ssett; Littlewood, 7. for 39, Bowling Old Lane v. King C ross; W impenny, 7 for 50, Lockwood v. Huddersfield; Wallace, 6 for 13 , Slaithw aite v. Lin thw aite; Illingworth, 6 for 25, Hopton Mills v. C astleford; Ward, 5 for 16, Cleckheaton v. Birstall. Wimpenny’s looks of smaller account than some of the others ; but it was not, for that bowler and F arrar (54) were m ainly responsible for Huddersfield’s first defeat of the season. Sheffield United was another hitherto unbeaten team which went down, Bradford being their conquerors. H ills (Essex), Warren, and Bracey were all playing for Featherstone v. Hull on Saturday. In South W ales cricket the surprise of the day was the easy win of Llanelly (178 for 7)—Page 69, Hugh Howells 35, H. E . Trubshaw 3 1, Percy Rees 30) over Cardiff, who only made 93, though they iucluded their big scorer, Norman Riches. Cardiff St. Mary’s (200 for 7—M cCraith 8 1, Rooney 45) had the best of a draw with Barry (128 for 8). Swansea got out the E a rl of Plym outh’s X I for 81, and replied with 142 for 4 (D. B. W illiams 37, E . W. Jones 32, Morris 30). Maxwell (5 for 20) and Creber (5 for 34) were Swansea’s bowlers, and these two, one fast right, the other slow left, undoubtedly form a very deadly combination. Panteg (who on Thursday had gone down badly to Blackwood, for wbom Roberts made a splendid 100* in a total of 140) had rather the worst of a draw with Cardiff Y.M .C .A . (116 for 8 dec.), Panteg’s reply being 70 for 8. Five centuries have been made on the Panteg ground this season, by the way. Plymouth Merthyr, the strongest club side in Wales, put out Neath for 90 (T. A. L . Whittington 30), W illiams taking 5 for 22 and the burly Bestwick 4 for 40, and then ran up 186 for 6 (Watts 50*, D avey 46). CliftoD fielded a strong side against Newport, and won pretty comfortably— 188 (Tunnidift'e 43, Windsor 36* and Im lay 33) to 138 (Diver 5 1). Penarth made 205 for 8 (W. Davies 59*, H. Sweet-Escott 56) against Abergavenny, who were lucky to get off with a draw, only Marsham and Tresawna making any stand at all for them. H . T. Hunter (65), G. H . Watson (46), and the Rev. H . White (5 for 33) were the chief factors in a big win by Northumberland County over Benwell H ill in the Tyneside League. Wallsend (R. G. Elliott 72) beat Tynedale— 146 for 8 to 138—H. Arkle scoring 40 for the losers. A win by 2 runs for Old Novocastrians over North Durham, F . E . M arkham taking 6 for 3 1, provided real excitement— anybody’s game right up to the last. Ryton (J. B . Newbigin 53, R . Thompson 6 for 26) easily accounted for Backworth Percy. Benwell beat South Northumberland by 14 runs ; scoring was small, C. Danson having 4 for 1 for the winners, R . W . Clark 5 for 10 for the losers. St. George’s defeated Tynemouth by 68 runs, W ingham taking 6 wickets for the winners, and J . B . Duncan 5 for the losers ; no one in the match topped 35, though useful scores were made by R . T. Whitehorn, C. F . Stanger-Leathes, M. C. H ill, and R . W. Nicholson. Burnmoor and Whitburn should have met in a re-arranged fixture in the Durham League (E. Div.) on Wednesday, but the Burnmoor ground was under water. Saturday’s matches provided comparatively few sensations. Eppleton went down to Durham City — quite expeoted; but what was not expected was that Adamson and Hendren, the City stalwarts, should get a round ’un each! A. P . Ashley (45). W. E . Maynard, the skipper, (44), and F. Scott (20) retrieved the situation; and Adamson and Hendren, with some of their own to get back, equally divided the Eppleton wickets between them. W. Wood made 4 1 for the losers. Boldon (J. J . Common 32, Kitchener 7 for 28) easily beat Philadelphia, the weak est batting side in the League. Wearmouth (W. F . Parrington, the old Rossallian, 49, R . Robson 5 for two) defeated Seaham Harbour (H. Chapman 36) by 109 to 88. Whitburn, visited by Sunderland, had a record gate and a heavy beating. Cecil Brooks, the champions’ captain, made 62, and his brother Hubert 37 ; the innings was declared at 203 for 8, and before Morris (6 for 38) Whitburn went down for 90 (T. K . Dobson 53). The big hitter, E . Cogdon, making his first appearance of the season for Sunderland, slammed up 19 in two overs. South Shields easily beat Burnmoor— 180 for 8 to 10 1. Nearly every one got runs for Shields, and H arry again gathered scalps—7 for 43. That disappointing side, Chester-le-Street, succumbed to Hendon, for whom G. Metcalfe made 44* and N. H . Dixon 43, the latter having first lowered 7 for 4 1. For Chester J . Bewick had 6 for 36—the one decent performance for the side. Medomsley, in a match of small scores. F . Swinhoe’s 29 was the best. Court (whose benefit it was) took 7 for 1 4 ; T. Howarth, for the losers, had 6 for 17. Craghead (T. Stainthorpe 67, J . Peele 47, C. R . M ilam 8 for 37) were all over Burnhope. Burnopfield (W. C. Wood 32) beat Birtley (S. Sedgwick 36) by only 17 runs. Solly, at one time on the Worcester staff, had 5 for 27 for the winners. Kimblesworth (F. Horne 63, G . Dickinson 46, W, Faulkner 33*, G.Bates 32) made a long w ay the biggest total of the day—221 for 7, dec. ; Gateshead Fell could only reply with 69, Horne taking 6 wickets. Langley Park beat Consett by 14 runs in a game whose closeness was its one special feature. The Score Book. SURREY v. KENT.—At Kennington Oval, July 4 and 5. Kent won wickets. First innings.
