C l e v e r T w ic k e n h a m P a ir . T w o v e ry able cricketers who are doing w ell this season are W albanck and Stocker, o f Tw icken ham . W alban ck is a bats m an w ell above the average, and h is inn in gs o f 6 1 not out against L lo y d ’s R eg ister w as a sparklin g effort. W alban ck has a n eat style at the crease. H e p la ys a nice straigh t bat, and hits w ith plenty o f p ow er all round the w icket. Stocker, who captured 5 o f the L lo y d ’s R egister w ickets for 16 ru n s, is a very deadly bow ler w hen the w icket helps him . B o w lin g w ith a nice ea sy action, he keeps a w onderful good length, and as he also m ak es the ball turn q u ickly from the p itch it is easy to un derstand w h y few batsm en can get properly set to his trick y d eliveries. C a r t e r ’ s P r e t t y S t y l e . I am v ery pleased to h ear th at m y old friend W illie C arte1 has put a sm art inn in gs on the score book. C arter, w ho learned the gam e w ith the G arfield Club at W est H am P ark , h as played excellen t cricket during the last few years for South W est H am . A gain st B e x le y H ea th he p layed a p retty inn in gs o f 59. Not too rob u stly built, C arter p lays the correct gam e at the crease in a stylish fashion. H is stance is neat, and he w ields a very straight bat. Som ew h at o f a defensive p layer C arter can, w hen opportunity offers, score q u ickly by clever strokes on the leg side, u seful drives, and w ell placed cuts. A p retty p layer to w atch, he is not on ly a thoroughly sound batsm an but also quite a top-class fielder, and in a m atch saves as m an y runs as he m akes. A n oth er So u th W est H am m an who is doing w ell this season is T . M itch ell. A vigorous batsm an, M itch ell often m akes a useful score, w hile h is w icket-keepin g is v e ry fine indeed. A B r o m l e y H a l f - b a c k . H . N o all is p robably better know n as the B ro m ley F .C . centre h a lf than he is as a cricketer. Y e t for the T id a l B asin club he has accom plished m an y rem arkable feats w ith the ball. H e w as alm ost u n playab le again st B e x le y H eath , as h is 7 w ickets for 34 clearly indicates. N o all is a bow ler who uses his head. H e m ixes up his balls w ithout an y change o f action, and he is v e ry clever at d iscovering a batsm an ’s w eaknesses. H e sends up a slow leg break, a fa st straight one, a full toss, and a variety o f fu n n y balls. H e bow ls good length, bad length, and unplayab le length deliveries, n ever sending down the sam e kin d o f ball tw ice in succession. W ith an easy action he can be kept on all the afternoon w ithout lo sin g h is length or quick break from the pitch, and on the w hole there are few better bow lers about than the B rom ley football favourite. T h r e e F in e P l a y e r s . A p layer who can alw ays be depended upon to do w ell for his side is W estm acott o f R ichm ond. Quick on h is feet, W estm acott scores n early all round the w icket, and com bining a good defence w ith a variety o f clever scoring strokes is a cap ital p layer to w atch . In C larke and B u xton , the A lberm arle and F rie rn B a rn e t team have tw o excellent cricketers. C larke is a fine batsm an w ith a nice style at the crease. H e owns a sound defence, and quickly gets set to the best o f bow ling. B u xto n is a bow ler whom m an y batsm en fear. H e recen tly took 8 N easden w ickets for 5 1 , and as he alw ays keeps a good length and m akes the ball tu rn qu ickly off the pitch he is gen erally effective, for his trick y variation of pace and pitch m akes him difficult to p lay. HAROLD HALSE, Arlington and Leytonstone C.C. U se f u l P l a y e r s . One of the n eatest run-getters you could w ish to see is F reem an tle o f the Am h erst C lub. P la y in g resolu te cricket F reem an tle, w ho scored 59 in capital style against W est Shene, is a batsm an who never encourages the bow ler. H e gives the ball the fu ll face o f the bat, and places h is scoring strokes w ith fine ju d gm en t. B ren tford G as W orks h ave som e very capable cricketers this season. M u rph y is a sm art all-round p layer. D an drid ge is quite a clever m atch-w in nin g bow ler, and R oberts one o f the m ost u seful batsm en in good class club cricket. R ob erts’s inn in gs o f 5 1 against N orw ood G reen w as a fine piece o f batting. H e is strong on all loose balls, and com bining effective h ittin g pow ers w ith a stead y defence, is alw ay s a hard m an to get out.
