Cricket 1912
J une 29, 1912. CEICKET: A WEEKLY EECOKD OP THE GAME. 287 (thanks chiefly to A. E . Manger, 38 and 6 for 2*2) beat Bishop Street by 5 1 runs. iielgrave Town defeated Arundel by 5 runs—54 to 49. In the other two more runs were made. C.arendon Park Congrega tional ran up 194 for 7 v. Sparkenhoe, F . Taylor batting well for 76* ; and Victor totalled 173 for 7 (H. Symington 63*) v. Belvoir United. Todmorden’s 3 runs’ victory over Burnley was the chief sensa tion in Laucashire League circles, unless one excepts H allam ’s all ten wickets for 39 (Nelson v. Rishton). In general bowlers had the better of the argument. Ivermode took 7 for 3 1 (Bacup v. Enfield), Brown 7 for 58 (Colne v. Haslingden), F« rd 6 for 37 (East Lancashire v. Lowerhouse), and G ill 6 for 40 (Todmorden v. Burnley). In the Central Lancashire League such analyses as Simpson’s 8 for 13 (Rochdale v. Heywood), Littlewood’s 6 for 15 (Crompton v. Middleton), Bowden’s 6 for 16 (Littleborough v. Walsden) were recorded. J . A. Lowe marie 68 of his 89 for Crompton v. Middleton in fours. Haggas ran up 94 for Moorside v. Milnrow. I. Dearnaley made 78 for Glos-op v. Dukinfield. Moorside and Milnrow plaved a tie game, 18 1 each. Yorkshire wickets gave the bowlers help, too. For B .tley v. Chick^nley J . Handford took 8 for 44. Knutton was again prominent with 7 for 27 (Bradford v. Scarborough). For Leeds v. Harrogate Mellor had 7 for 55, and for Bowling Old Lane v. Brighouse Little- wood took 7 for 6L. B ut the feat of the day was Pratt’s 7 for 7 (Morley v. Birstall). N. Sugden made 84 for Slaithwaite, v. Linth- waite H all, F . Jebson 81 for Linthwaite v. Lockwood, and S. Peel carried his bat through for 63 (Huddersfield v. Kirkheaton). G. Swithenbank scored 70 for Bowling Old Lane v. Brighouse, A. W . Simm s 81 for Leeds v. Harrogate, and Glover 76 for Morley v. B irstall. In the Durham Senior League there was only one special sensation, the collapse of Philadelphia before South Shields for the paltry total of 1 1 . H . W . Me ndrew took 6 for 2, H arry 4 for 6. McAndrew had 5 for 0 at one stage, and only one scoring stroke was m ale off him . There were eight ducks. South Shields totalled 63, and Philadelphia, batting again, made 48 for 7. At Ashbrooke, where Sunderland met Hendon, over £40 in gate-money resulted. Thanks to the fine batting of C. Brooks (88), E . L . Squance, the old Rossallian (69, retired hurt), and H. Brooks, who helped his brother to make a good start (30) Sunderland was able to apply the closure at 234 for 5. Hendon only made 134, Morris taking 5 for 55. Eppleton had at last the joy of winning a match. Except A. L . Scott-Owen (72), the Burnmoor batsmen failed, the total being 10 2 ; Eppleton replied with 188 for 8 (W. Wood 66*). Boldon beat Seaham Harbour by the narrow margin of 9 run?. J . J . Common made 57 for the winners, F . Rowell 4 1, Dickens 36, C. Pollock 3 1 for the losers. Thackeray had the Chester-le-Street v. Wearmouth match as a benefit, and took 8 for 44 to m ark the occasion, but could not win the match for his side. Clode and J . Hindson each con tributed 48 to the visitors’ total of 160 ; Chester-le-Street, a terribly disappointing side this season, could only raise 125 (J. Turnbull 33). Hendren had a benefit at Durham, and did even better than Thackeray, taking 9 for 34 v. Whitburn. T. K. Dobson’s 42 was exactly half of Whitburn’s total. Adamson (35) was top scorer for the w inners; he is usually there or thereabouts. G . E . Pinder, 16-4-3-29-10, for Norton-on-Tees v. Redcar. Such was the “ leading line ” in the North Yorkshire and South Durham League. Norton (A. P. Rutherford, tried for Hants early this week, 44) won easily. The return of Jackson to West Hartlepool deserves a note ; one is glad to see that this worthy professional has recoverel from his injury. A. B . Horsley (96) and T. Kinch (89) put on runs apace for Hartlepool, who declared at 227 for 5, and dismissed North Ormesby for 64 (G. Middlemiss 6 for 30, Jackson 3 for 20). Thornabv smashed up Stockton (167 to 51), H. Clarke taking 7 for 23. S. Dickson had 6 for 49 for the losers. F . R . Bulm er made 1 2 1 in excellent style for Guisborough v. Darlington, who replied to 223 for 7, dec., with 167 for 6. R . Boustield contributed 56, E . C. Robertson 52*, to Bishop Auckland’s 222 for 8, dec., v. Saltburn, who could only reach 38. J . T . Tucker’s 78 for Tynemouth v. County Club was the biggest score of the day in the Tyneside League. C. F . Stanger-Leathes made 7 1 for St. George’s v. Backworth Percy, G. Milne 70* (in a total of 87 !) for Benwell H ill v. Ryton, and the Rev. H. H aslam 5 1 for Old Novocastrians v. South Northumberland. Milne followed up his score with a fine analysis of 7 for 35 ; J . Carr took 7 for 45 for Old Novocastrians, and W ingham 6 for 29 for St. George’s. On the whole, scoring ruled lower than usual. In the N.W . Durham League South Moor are still unbeaten. On Saturday F . Swinhoe hit up 66* v. Kimblesworth, and Court took 5 for 25, South Moor winning by 4 wickets and 15 1 runs. Brown, the Bnrnhope pro., contributed 60 to his side’s total of 106 v. Gateshead Fell, who could only make 47 in reply. Medomsle.v beat Burnopfield by 9 runs— 78 to 69—T . Ainsley (5 for 14) being the chief factor in the victory. A. Robinson scored 59 for Consett v. Craghead, a game which ended in a pretty even draw—Consett 19 1, Craghead 145 for 7. On Thursday in last week Newport beat Panteg by one run— 138 to 13 7 —vengeance for their defeat of a week ago. Priest made 50 for the winners, Sm ith 34 for the losers. This is not the first time the two sides have plaved very close games. Panteg had rather a bad week, for on Saturday Abergavenny (Dr. W. S. Tresawna, 59, C. H . B . Marsham , 43) beat them by 77— 15 3 to 76. Cardiff, lacking some of their best, who were playing for South Wales, went down to Penarth, for whom R . A. Gibbs batted splendidly for 75—totals 1 15 and 122 for 4. Llanelly (Percy Rees 63, C. S. Trubshaw 59) beat Neath (J. W. Jones 49. l’ollard 35) by 29 runs. Neath (minus Whittington) fought, hard. Barry beat Lewis Merthyr, 149 to 105. St. Fagan ’s (T. W. P. Charles and W. Towse each 4 for 7) tumbled out Radyr for 14, and then hit up 218 for 7 (Charles 10 1, G. E . Cording 69*). Almost as one-sided a game was that between Plymouth Merthyr (221 for 4—R. Davey 84, E . Watts 55*) and Briton Ferry Steel Works (56). Another Thursday game in Gwent saw St. Jam es (Pontypool) score a remarkable victory over Abergavenny, a very hard team to beat. St. Jam es could only only make 84, but then got the home team out on a good wicket for 6 1, Brough taking 7 for 2 1, and doing the hat trick. Pauteg had a man in the county team at Stoke, after a l l; but J . H . Evans was only wired for when someone else had failed, and was not in time to bat in tbe first innings. B y special invitation, our representative went to Wembley on Wednesday, the 26th, to see L . & N. W. R . meet Crewe Alexandra in the Sir Frederick Harrison Cup competition. It was Alexandra Day, which should have been a good omen for the visitors. But somehow the omen failed to pan out. Alec Houghton won the toss, and L. & N. W. R . totalled 96, H . J . Paris and E . Howard each 2 1. Fred Moorhouse (Warwickshire and Cheshire) had 7 lor 36. E . Osborn, who has led Crewe Alexandra for 23 years, started well but got in front of a straight one when he had made 14. The rest could do nothing with A. Boxall and Percy Skilton, who bowled unchanged, Boxall taking 7 for 14. All out 44. Was Captain Osborn downcast? Not he ? In the pavilion afterwards he was the life and soul of the party, full of jest and ancedote. L . <XrN. W. R . meet Earlestown, the Cup holders, at Llandudno in August. The Score Book.
