Cricket 1912

220 CEICKET : A WEEKLY EECOED OF THE GAME. J u n e 8, 1912. What a great cricketing fam ily the Steels were ! The five most famous of the brothers were “ A. 0 .,” D. Q., H. B ., F. L .,an d E. E., and all played for Lancashire ; and now we have “ A. I.,” a son of A. G., representing Middlesex— it is good to see the name again. What a grand player A. G. was and how sweetly he could c u t : then if he could not readily dislodge a batsman with his ordinary bowling, he would try those skyward balls to drop over his (the batsman’s) head on to the wicket . . . . and dear old E. M. Grace would say to this type of bowling “ get a gun and shoot them .” The Sefton club had a most interesting game last Saturday against Neston, who complied 201 ; F. J. Kirby, the Cheshire county man, being top scorer with 76. Sefton were in a bad way when 7 wickets were down, for the score was but 68. W ith the association of J. S. Stubbs and Gilmore a change was effected, both men hitting well ; the former ultimately carrying out his bat for a splendid 55, whilst Gilmore notched 25, the score when time was called totalling 147 for 8 wickets. A weak eleven of Liverpool— due to some of the players taking part in the schools tour—easily beat Northern at Moor Park. Scores 103 to 126 for 6. After each match, I receive a report from the energetic captain of Waterloo Park, F. J. Polley. Mr. Polley tells me that the first eleven so far have not lost a match, Liverpool Police, Garston, and Gateacre, being the three latest successes. The Police were all dismissed for 13, Dawkins 6 for 6, and Polley 4 for 6, being in the timber-yard. Waterloo notched 83, the captain being responsible for 26. Against Garston the scores were better matched, 128 to 98. E. J. Parr, a good forcing batsman, leading the field with 46. For Garston, G. Ubsdell, son of George Ubsdell who played for Hampshire 40 years ago, scored 41 and took 9 for 33, so it was not his fault that Garston lost. Versus Gateacre, Mr. Polley must have kept a good length w ith his expresses, for he secured 8 for 24, out of a total of 46. Waterloo notched 114, Parr being unfortu nately run out for 26. A t Litherland, the village team were successful over Liverpool University, the scores being 60 to 36. G. Kerr for the winners secured 8 wickets for 14 runs, keeping a most accurate length.
