Cricket 1912
M ay 11, 1912. CEICKET: A WEEKLY EECOED OE THE GAME. 133 scorer in M.C.C.’s second. A. I. Steel—Ms initial appearance in first-class cricket, where his father’s son is more than welcome—made a few very well indeed, and Capt. Ivo Barrett showed that he has not lost his cricket. George Hirst was at his deadliest. Evidently he means to play for England again. Booth got Foster, but George took the other nine wickets— 14 for 109 in the match! There followed a tense struggle, which showed clearly that the stimulus of championship points is not always needed for good fighting cricket. Tasker, the young Pontefract amateur, showed nerve and grit at the crisis, and pulled his side through by two wickets, in spite of some fine bowling and close fielding. N o t t in g h a m s h ir e v . A u s t r a l ia n s . Smith, Kelleway, Emery, and Webster stood down from the colonial side, whose batting was on the whole disappoint ing. But of course the rain had somewhat affected the wicket, and the new men were struggling with conditions to which they were unused. Macartney’s 84 suggested a distinct advance on his 1909 form ; Jennings’s second innings of 51 was real good value ; the veteran skipper showed something of his old ability each time ; not much can be said for the rest. A. B. Crawford’s 51 was the biggest score of the Notts, first innings, made in 65 minutes, by real dashing cricket, imperfect but highly commendable. This tall, upstanding batsman should be of great use to his new county. Matthews got a big break on and kept a good length ; McLaren was very accurate, but unsuited by the dead pitch ; Hazlitt bowled well on the first day, and deserved a better analysis. The wicket on the Wednes day morning was probably better than it had been at any prior stage of the match, and it- was recognised that tho Australians had no soft thing on. A splendid start by A. O. Jones and George Gunn put them in Queer Street; John Gunn followed up the good work, and finally Notts, won by 6 wickets. It is hardly the start Gregory and Co. would have chosen; but they are not likely to be dis heartened. The Score Book. M.C.C. v. NOTTS.— At Lord’s, and 56.
