Cricket 1912
130 CEICKET : A WEEKLY EECOED OF THE GAME. M a y 11, 1912. New South Wales was undoubtedly the strongest State side; but it cannot be said that the mother state produced in 1911-2 any absolutely new player of marked promise. It is true, however, that she could have put in the field three or four elevens well equipped at all points, and capable of holding their own against strong opposition ; many players of admittedly first-class possibilities did not get even one chance this season. Austin Diamond only had one innings, and then made a not-out century. Victoria’s younger blood is distinctly hopeful. Hartkopf, Norman Brown, Braid and Liddicutt ought to be very useful in the future. But if Armstrong and Ransford do carry out their threat to retire gaps will be left that the Victorians will feel even more than their old rivals will feel the loss of Trumper, Carter, and Cotter. And what South Australia will do without Clem Hill it is hard to say ! Even with him she has not won too many matches of late. Crawford, Mayne, Dolling, Whitty, and Rees are all good men, well worth a place on a first-class side ; Chamberlain has not yet fulfilled his early promise ; of the remainder the best can be said is that they are useful, some of them only moderately so, though there is big promise in young Murray. Queensland would probably make a better showing in Sheffield Shield games than South Australia ; and Tasmania seems to have a good eleven, if only they could all be got together at once.
