BORDER v. GRIQUALAND WEST. Played at Lord’s No. 1 Ground on March 13 and 14. Drawn. Had it been found possible to play out this match the Border would in all probability have won, for after having a lead of 46 on the first innings they left Griqualand West 225 to make in two hours and three quarters, of which number 100 had been obtained for four wickets by the time rain and poor light caused the game to be given up. In Border’s first innings Cross and Preston added 74 together and Johnson and Jarman 36, and in their second Phillips and Hartigan put on 88 for the third wicket. Play on the second day was interrupted several times by rain. In a local account of the Monday’s play it was said:— “ As mathematicians, the umpires proved somewhat erratic, one of Hartigan’s ‘ overs’ consisting of three balls only, whilst seven and eight balls in an over were not infrequent.” Score and analysis:— B o r d e r . N ATA L v. ORANGE R IV E R COLONY. Played at Lord’s No. 4 Ground on March 15 and 16. Natal won by five wickets. Natal showed excellent all-round cricket on the first day, scoring 324 and getting rid of the O.R.C. for 83. T he chief honours belonged to Thom son and Samuelson. T he form er, who hit six 6’s and fifteen 4’s in making 145 out of 240 in two hours and three- quarters, put on 43 with Pearse, 42 with M orley, 70 with Samuelson and 63 with Cox. H e was m issed when 56, and hit very freely after reaching three figures. Van Zyl, a very fast bowler, had the best figures with the ball. The O .R.C. fell for 83, Samuelson carrying everything before him . The wickets went down at the following totals :— 45, 45, 46, 46, 46, 50, 57, 72, 72, 83. W hen they followed-on the O.R.C. had an uphill task, but, thanks chiefly to J. E. Jewell, were beaten by five wickets only. The player named m ade his 118 out of 187 in 125 minutes, was m issed when 103 and 116 and hit seventeen 4’s. It was a grand display. Sennett, m uch slower in his methods, scored 46 and helped to put up 177 for the opening partner ship. Natal were left with 86 to win and obtained the runs for the loss of half their wickets.
