Cricket 1911

586 RUGBY FOOTBALL AND CRICKET. December 2 ,1911 . The S t a f f o r d s h i r e Countv} C.C. On the evening of Monday, November 27th, at the North Stafford Hotel, Stoke, a cheerful company of some eighty or more sat down to the complimentary dinner given by the Staffordshire County Cricket Club to the team in honour of its winning the Minor Counties Championship. The Earl of Lichfield was in the chair, and among the company were Colonel A. H. Heath (many years captain of the county team and now Hon. Treasurer of the club), the Mayor of Stoke-on-Trent (Mr. F. Geen), Messrs. G. T. Bagaley (Assistant Hon. Treasurer), W . C. Hancock (Hon. Sec.), Bernard Meakin (captain of the eleven), Percy Briggs, J. S. Heath, W . H. Wood, H. Dearing, J. S. Poole, W . H. Twigg, T. B. Rhodes, H. Eagland, Stanley Gleaves, C. J. Blagg, A. R. Wood, F . R. Twemlow, G. Meakin, A. Hollowood, J. S. Nichols, G. Deyes, Bucknell, Yost, J. Fereday, Sedgwick, and 0. N. Pentelow (of Cricket). The only player missing was S. F. Barnes, whose absence does not need explaining ; and if he could have heard half the nice things that were said of him, not only by the speakers but in casual conversation around the tables, he would assuredly have felt pleased indeed. For the information of those interested in such matters And for the sake of preserving a record of a memorable gathering we append the Menu and Toast List. M e n d . Clear Soup. Fillets of Sole. Mr. A. R. Wood. Mr. S. Gleaves. .. Mr. J. N. Pentelow (of Cricket). No one spoke at great length, but both the noble Chairman and Colonel Heath delivered speeches that met with full and hearty appreciation from their hearers ; Mr. C. J. Blagg, a veteran of nearly fourscore, spoke well and to the p oin t; and the two who responded for the team pleased everybody—Mr. Meakin with a speech full of humour and good-humour, which can hardly have been a maiden effort, and Mr. Nichols with a blunt and manly effort in which he made it very clear that the Staffordshire team is a happy family, full of pride in its captain and in its foremost player, Sidney Barnes, and of belief in its capacity to do again what it did in 1911. Mr. Meakin pointed out the fallacy of the belief held in some quarters that Staffordshire is a one-man team, weak without Barnes, and in testifying to the ability of his team individually and col lectively he paid a graceful and well-deserved tribute to Mr. Percy Briggs, who has so often led the side in his own unavoidable absence. Well-rendered songs from Messrs. J. Walker and G. Whitworth gave variety to the proceedings, and then each member of the team was presented with a vellum-bound book containing the scores of Staffordshire’s 1911 matches—a memento which doubtless all will prize. Long years hence the recipients may remember with pride the genuine and unstinted applause which was given to each man as he stepped up to receive his copy. Letters of apology from several gentlemen unavoidably prevented from attending—including Colonel Bill and Mr. H. D. Stratton, the ex-captain—were read by Mr. Bagaley, and a thoroughly enjoyable evening was brought to a close in the usual loyal manner. CRICKET IN AUSTRAL IA . VICTORIA v. SOUTH AUSTRALIA.
