Cricket 1911

560 RUGBY FOOTBALL AND CRICKET. O ctob e r 14, 1911. AN ENGLISH TEAM FOE THE ARGENTINE. Early in the New Year a team will leave this country, under the captaincy of Lord Hawke, for a short tour in the Argentine Republic. The side will sail from Southampton on January 19th and arrive at Buenos Aires on February 10th. The following programme has been arranged:— Feb. 21, 22.—At Belgrano, v. Northern Suburbs. „ 24, 25, 26.— At Lomas, Second Test-mafrh. „ 28, 29.—At Hurlingham, v. The South. Mar. 1, 2, 3.—At Palermo, Third Test- match. ,, 5, 6.—At Rosario, v. Northern Camps. On no previous occasion has a team from England visited South America, and it is, therefore, appropriate that the first side to do so should be under the captaincy of Lord Hawke, the greatest of all cricket missionaries. His Lordship has played for Eton, Cambridge, the M.C.C., Yorkshire, the Gentlemen and England, and during his career of over thirty years has gained every honour, with but one exception, that the cricket world has to bestow. And in 1912 the distinction alluded to—but “ Hold! We are observed. We must dissemble ! ” Feb. 11.—Practice at Palermo. ,, 12.—Practice at Hurlingham. ,, 13, 14.—At Hurlingham, v. North ern Camps. ,, 15, 1C.— At Talleres, v. Southern Suburbs. ,, 18. 19, 20.—(Carnival.) At Hur lingham, First Test-match. Australian Public School Averages, 1910=11. ST. PETER’S COLLEGE. THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF SPOET.* The fotirth, and last, volume of this valuable work has now been published, the subjects in the concluding portion ranging alpha betically from Rackets to Zebra. On several occasions we have remarked on the excellence of the illustrations and the soundness of the articles in this edition, and we can add that the high standard reached in the three first volumes is fully maintained in the fourth. In the complete work there are about two thousand illustrations from photographs and drawings as well as twenty-nine full-page coloured plates. There is, too, a capital index. We can think of no more acceptable gift to a lover of sport and games than the four handsome volumes of which the Encyclopedia consists. In May, 1912, there will be published at six guineas by the London and Counties Press Association, of 6 Henrietta Street, Covent Garden, W.C., a volume entitled “ Imperial Cricket,” edited by Mr. P. F. Warner. Among the contributors will be Lord Hams, Lord Hawke, Sir A. Bailey and Messrs. John Shuter, H. D. G. Leveson-Gower, L. 0. S. Poidevin, B. J. T. Bosanquet, Cecil Headlam, R. H. Lyttelton, A. C. M. Croome, A. F. Somerset, F. G.. Guggisberg, Andrew Lang and F. S. Ashley-Cooper. An attempt will be made to deal with the game in every part of the Empire, and photographs of the grounds will be a feature of the volume. Even Samoa and Fiji will have chapters devoted to their cricket. * The Encyclopedia oj Sport and Games .—Edited by the Earl of Suffolk and Berkshire, Vol. iv.—Rackets to Zebra.
