H e w as ca p ta in in 1857 and p ra ctica lly so in 1858 also, w h en , h o w e v e r, th e late Mr. J. B . D y n e w as th e n om in a l lead er. H e p la y e d against H a rrow in 1855 a n d 1858, w h en E to n w ere b e a te n on each o cca sio n b y an in n in g s : th ere w as n o m a tch in 1856, and in 1857, w h en the gam e w as an irregu lar on e, M r. Sutherland d id n o t p la y . N o t a ce rta in b a t, bu t p la y e d several fin e in n in g s.” H e w as also a u sefu l w ick et­ k eep er. M r. A lfred L u b b o ck has said th a t “ H e w as a v e ry keen crick eter, an d p o p u la r in th e sch o o l. H e was v e ry fo n d o f sa y in g th a t he th an k ed his stars for tw o things— th e first w as, th a t h e w as n o t a w om a n ; an d the secon d , th a t h e w as b rou g h t u p at E to n C ollege, B u ck s. A t th a t tim e B u ck s. w as th e p ro p e r ad d ress fo r E t o n : n ow W in d so r is th e o fficia l p o st to w n .” H e h a d been a m em b er o f the M .C .C . sin ce 1878 a n d w as eld er broth er of C apt. H e w as a well- k n o w n a u th o rity o n agricu ltu re an d th e b reed in g o f draught an im als.
