Cricket 1911

526 CEICKET: A WEEKLY EECOED OF THE GAME. S ept . 16, 1911. W ARW ICK SH IR E v. ENGLAND . (To be concluded.) This match, in which Warwickshire, as Champion County, opposed England was commenced at the Oval on Monday last and before the end of the first day the result was foreshadowed, the county, after being dismissed on a good wicket for 129 in two hours and a-quarter, having 162 runs made against them for the loss of Spooner. They took the field without Kinneir, who was suffering from lumbago, whilst on the England side Hitch and Dean appeared instead of Brearley and Barnes. The best form for the county was shown by Baker, who made 25 in 55 minutes, but F. G. Stephens and Charlesworth had previously added 36 together for the second wicket. The batting was very weak, even though Hearne, who was a stranger to them, disguised his break well. England gained the lead without much trouble and then went right ahead. Hobbs, who batted for 145 minutes without a mistake and hit eleven 4’s, made 41 for the first wicket with Spooner and 152 for the second with Mead. He hit all round in delightful fashion, his placing to leg especially being good. The subsequent play was dominated by Warner, who scored 244 out of 437 in 5 hours 20 minutes, giving only one chance— to slip, when 94—and hitting thirty-five 4’s. His driving was particularly good and he reachel 50 in 80 minutes, 100 in 150 and 200 in four hours and a-quarter. He added 61 for the third wicket with Mead, 142 for the fourth in 105 minutes with Hearne and 234 for the fifth in 155 with Fry. Mead, who made no mistake, batted for three hours and hit a 5 and ten 4’s, and Fry, who was overshadowed throughout by Warner, made strokes all round the wicket. Warwickshire stood their long outing in tbe pluckiest manner, their fielding never becoming loose, but at no period was their bowling strong enough to cause much trouble. Ba n interfered with play on the third afternoon, and on Thursday morning the score wa3 as follow s:— First innings. W a r w ic k s h ir e . F. G. Stephens, c Mead, b Dean Smith (E. J.\ b Dean ...
