Cricket 1911
S e p t . 16, 1911. CEICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 519 LORD LONDESBOROUGH’S X I. v. THE M.C.C.'s AUSTRAL IAN TEAM . Played at Scarborough on September 7, 8 and 9 and left drawn. Inasmuch as F. R. Foster, Iremonger, Kinneir and Woolley could not, for various reasons, play, the touring side were not at full strength, and they were handicapped further by Warner being obliged to go in last on account of indisposition. At one time it was thought of altering tbe title of the match, but by including both Strudwick and Smith in the M.C.C.’s side it was found possible to adhere to tbe programme. Except that Le Couteur displaced Pearson, Lord Londesborough s XI. was as advertised. Winning the toss, the side last named made a poor start on a good wicket against some excellent bowling and fielding, for, notwithstanding that Spooner batted well for 90 minutes for 41, half the side were out for 90. Sharp and Hirst then came together, and atoned for previous shortcomings by adding 150 together in two hours and a-quarter. Of that number Hirst, who hit a 6 and six 4’s, claimed 77: he offered one chance—the only one missed during the innings—being let off at long-leg by Douglas when 17. Sharp’s play was faultless, and during the 160 minutes he was in made ten 4’s. Jessop subse quently obtained 45 in three-quarters of an hour and the total reached 301. Hitch, who maintained his great pace well, took the last five wickets for 30 runs, and altogether claimed seven for 87. The batting of the Anglo-Australian team was dominated by a splendid display by Hobbs, who, going in first and carrying his bat through the inDings, claimed all but 60 of the runs made from the bat for his side. He obtained his 117 in two and a-half hours, drove and cut brilliantly, made no mistake and hit a 6 and nineteen 4’s. Vine helped him to add 66 in 45 minutes, and Smith stayed whilst 42 were put on for the sixth wicket. Even allowing for tbe fact tbat both Field and Faulkner bowled well, the poor total (190) obtained by tbe side must be attributed chiefly to bad batting. Lord Londesborough’s X I., going in the second time with a lead of 111, quickly met with three disasters, Tyldesley, Bosanquet and Faulkner all being out for 19. At that point the touring side were not in such a bad position, but a prolific fourth-wicket stand by Spooner and Jessop quite changed the aspect of the match. In a couple of hours their partnership produced 225 runs, but for having the game go against them the fielding side had only themselves to blame, for Jessop was’Jmissed at slip by Gunn from the first ball he received and. later, both were missed off successive balls from Vine, Jessop by Douglas when 35 and Spooner by Warner when he had made 32. Jessop obtained 34 runs from Hitch in two overs—four 4’s off one and a 6 and three 4’s off the next—and made his 136 out of 225 in two hours : jhis chief hits were a 6 and twenty-three fours. Spooner was fifth out, at 248, for a delightful innings of 94, which lasted 150 minutes. W ith seven men out for 258 the innings was closed, leaving the' M.C.C.’s team four hours and a-quarter in which to make 370. Rhodes and Hobbs gave the side a good start, the latter playing so freely that 50 went up in 35 minutes, and he reached his 60 out of 61 in three-quarters of an hour. At lunch he had made 75 of the 90 runs scored, and, altogether, claimed 84 of the 115 runs obtained for the first wicket in 90 minutes. He hit a 6 and thirteen 4’s. With Gunn in the good scoring was continued, 140 being added for the second wicket in 100 minutes, ere Rhodes, who had hit eight 4’s, fell to a fine catch at tbe wicket. Gunn and Mead’s stand for the third wicket realised 76, butHitch failed, and when Gunn was bowled through over-anxiety to reach his 100, stumps were drawn. _ Gunn batted for 165 minutes, and hit thirteen 4’s.
