Cricket 1911

510 CEICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. S ept . 9, 1911. SURR E Y y . SOMERSET. Played at the Oval on September 4 and 5 and won by Surrey by an innings and 47 runs. Somerset did fairly well on tbe first day, when, after having eight men out for 113, they scored 170. Poyntz batted finely for 80 minutes, and, with Joy showing good defence, the ninth partnership realised 48. After Hayward was out without a run Hobbs and Hayes put on 51 together and Strudwick played an excellent game for 53, in which were a 5 and seven 4's. It wras during a seventh-wicket stand of 85 which lasted an hour that Somerset’s total was passed. Knight cut beautifully and created a very good impression, and Goatly played vigorous cricket for 70 minutes. Hitch also hit hard, and among his strokes was a big drive for 6 off Poyntz, the ball landing on the pavilion above the press- box. Somerset did badly upon going in again and could not escape the innings defeat. Score and analysis :— First innings. S o m e r se t . B. L. After losing four wickets for 36, the Players effected a recovery, and in fivehours and 10 minutes made 432. To Mead belonged the chief honours. By perfect cricket he scored 223 out of 399 in four hours and a-quarter, hitting thirty-one 4’s and making some splendid on-drives. He gave no actual chance, but when 171 might have been run out. With Sharp he put on 86, with Thompson 201 in less than twohours aud with Hirst 52. Like their opponents, the Gentlemen fared badly at the start, six wickets going down before Field for 64. Then Bosanquet was seen at his best, making 103 without a mistake in an hour and a-quarter. Hitting freely and well all round, he hit two 6’s and sixteen 4’s and with Falcon, who batted steadily for 130 minutes, added 147 for the seventh wicket in 70 minutes. Leading by 142, the Players made 181 for five wickets and declared upon going in again, leaving the Gentlemen 342 to win. Tyldesley and Denton, after two wickets had fallen for 17, put on 118 together in an hour and a-quarter. As in their first innings, the Gentlemen quickly lost wickets, but a resolute stand of 124 by Faulkner and Warner saved the side. Score and analysis :— First innings. P layers . Second innings.
