S e p t. 9, 1911. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OP THE GAME. 503 © M t u a v t r . M r. W. R. WISTER. THE FATHER OF AMERICAN CRICKET. It is with much regret that we announce the death, at Saunders- town, Rhode Island, on August 21st, of Mr. William Botch Wister, M.A. He was eighty-three years old and had been failing in health for several months. He was one of the promoters of the Philadelphia C.C. and played for the United States asainst Canada in 1859. His “ Reminiscences of Cricket in Philadelphia before 1861,” form a valuable contribution to the history of the game in America. Throughout his life he was a great enthusiast of the game, and even participated in it when the Germantown C.C. celebrated its fiftieth anniversary seven years ago. Mr. Wister was a member of the old Germantown family of that name, being a son of William Wister and Sarah Logan Fisher. He was born on the Wister estate, Germantown, on December 7th, 1827. At the time of his death he was the second oldest member of the American Bar and the oldest alumnus of the University of Pennsylvania. NORFOLK v. By scoring 223 at Scarborough this week, Philip Mead credited himself with the highest innings of his career and the largest ever played by a left-hander in a match between the Gentlemen and the Players. Toone, the secretary of the Yorkshire County Cricket Club, showing the gate receipts and attendances of the home matches during the present season. The highest attendance at a single match was, of course, at Sheffield, against Lancashire, on August Bank Holiday, on the occasion of Rhodes’s benefit, when there were 33,738. At that match the gross gate amounted to £1,179, the nett gate being £1,002. The next largest Yorkshire gate was at Dewsbury, against Northants, on June 22, the number of spectators being 13,885, the nett gate amounting to £321. The smallest gate was at Hull, against the All-Indian eleven, on July 10, the number present being 1,993, the gross gate being £106, which, after paying tbe grant of £100 to the Indians, left a balance of only £6. The total attendance and gate for the home matches, which include fourteen championship matches, the matches with tbe Lancashire and Surrey second e.evens, tbe trial match at Sheffield for the selection of the English team, and the match with the Indians at Hull, are as follow s:—Total attendance, 145,443; gross gate, £4,950 ; percentage, £1,354 ; nett gate, £3,593. The aggregates at the various grounds are interesting. Sheffield leads with a total attendance of 06,393 ; Bradford takes second place with 28,318; Leeds is third witb 16,530, and Dewsbury fourth witu 13,885. The above figures show a substantial increase on 1910, when the total attendance was 107,088, gross gate £3,549, and the nett gate £2,325. THE COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP. First Inns. ------■----- Pts. rts.
