502 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. S ept . 9, 1911. YORKSH IRE v. M.C.C. AND GROUND. TWO SEPARATE HUNDREDS BY RHODES. Played at Scarborough on August 31, September 1 and 2 and left drawn. Against the weak M.C.C. bowling the county scored readily, and Rhodes, for the first time in his career, made two separate hundreds in a match. In his first innings he made 128 out of 282 in just over three hours and in his second 115 out of 209 in 155 minutes, giving no chance in either display. In his first innings he made 87 for the first wicket with Wilson and 159 for the second with Denton, who, hitting brilliantly, scored 94 of the number in 80 minutes : in his second he put on 84 with Denton and 78 with Hirst. The M.C.C. were set 339 to make to win in three hours, and only just failed to score tbe runs. Spooner played faultless cricket for 105 minutes for 102, and made 86 in an hour for the first wicket with Bird and 69 in 35 minutes for the second with Hardstaff. Jessop’s hitting subsequently dominated everything. He made 50 in 35 minutes and 100 in 70, and, in all, scored 117 of the last 179 runs made in 85 m inutes: he hit three 6’s, a 5 and seventeen 4’s, gave only one chance—when 102, and put on 85 in 35 minutes for the sixth wicket with King, who was struck severely over the heart by one ball and clean bowled by the next. When Thompson was out only 5 runs were wanted to win. In his first innings Jessop made his 59 out of 76 in three-quarters of an hour. Score and analysis:— First innings. All the first day—nearly five hours—was occupied by Essex in making 300. Perrin played a very careful innings of 113 and gave no chance during the three hours and three-quarters he was in. He put on 47 with Freeman, 117 (for the fourth) with Gillingham and 50 with Carpenter. By more enterprising cricket, Kent ran up 543 in 6 hours and ten minutes. After Humphreys had been caught everything was overshadowed by the batting of Seymour, who added 121 with Hardinge, 74 with Hutchings, 51 with Huish, 46 with Carr, 42 with Blythe and 102—in 50 minutes for the last wicket—with Fielder. He batted five and a-half hours for his 218 not out— the highest innings ever played for Kent—hit twenty- five 4’s, and, apart from a chance when 81, made no mistake. The second innings of Essex was somew'hat curious. Fane and Douglas put up 64 for the first wicket, but Carr then proved so destructive that seven men were out for 93. An early termination seemed probable, but Buckenham and Freeman added 61 for the eighth wicket in 40 minutes and the latter and Tremlin 93 for tbe ninth in 50. Eventually Kent were set 12 to win, a number they obtained without loss. Score and analysis :— First innings. E s s e x . J. W. H. T. Douglas, c Seymour, b Fielder 6 F. L.
