Cricket 1911

S ept . 2 ,1911. CEICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 493 Rossallian Tours- (1896-1911). In July of this year the old boys’ club of the famous Lancashire school which numbers amongst its cricket productions the Bev. Vernon Boyle, the Bev. F. Wynyard Wright, F. A. Phillips, the Boberts brothers, of Gloucestershire, the Stephens twins, of Warwickshire, L. V. Harper, F. H. Mugliston, and many another fine player who has not chanced as these have to figure in the first- class arena, brought off its sixteenth annual tour, with results that appear elsewhere. It is not possible to give here more than a brief account of these sixteen pilgrimages. But some few facts and figures concerning them and the chief actors in them will probably be read with interest by a good many people who have never even set eyes on the school near the Lancashire coast. In the course of the sixteen tours the Bossallians have played 128 matches, winning 54, losing 19, drawing 55. Six games arranged have had to be abandoned through stress of weather. The tours appended, including those of all players who totalled four-figures, and a selection of the rest. B A TTIN G AVERAGES. Not Highest Inns. Out. Runs. Aver. Score. H. W. Strong sides have always teen m et; Scarborough, Lincoln Lindum, the Yorkshire Gentlemen, Bossall School, Sedbergh School, Skipton, Hull, Huddersfield, Bipon and Grantham have been among the Bossalliatis’ opponents. But the old boys have held their own in no undecided fashion, as may be gathered from the results, and also from the fact that 30 centuries and 141 scores of 50 but under 100 have been made for them, as against 20 centuries and 96 scores of 50 and over on the debit side. The highest individual innirgs ever played for the Bossallians is Mr. T. A. Higson’s 200 at York last year. Mr F. A. Phillips made 194 v. Bossall School in 1896, and Mr. Higson and Mr. J. K. Lane have each played an innings of 192. Four centuries are down to Mr. H i: son’s account. Messrs. H. W . Carrington, H. B. Crook, and J. K. Lane have made three each, Messrs. C. B. Darlington, N. B. V. Jacob, E. D. Matthews, and H. M. Parrington two each : Messrs. B. C. Cutler, F. G. Edge, M. C. Hill, J. S. Jobson, N. Kendal. F. H. Mugliston, F. A. Phillips, T. Bidsdill-Smith, and W. H. Sell each appear once in the list. The principal batting averages over the whole period are As over 120 players took part in one or more of the 16 tours, this is only a small selection ; but it includes most of the men who have turned out frequently for the side. The constitution of the team has naturally varied much from year to year; but it has had one stable element. Mr. Thomas Atkinson Higson, the founder, captain, and secretary of the team, has not only gone on every tour, but he has actually played in every match ! This is a record nothing short of wonderful. A close examination of Mr. Higson’s figures will only add to its value. The Bossallian captain has scored more runs than any other two men on the side; indeed, Messrs. Carrington, Crook and Sell, who follow him in the matter of aggregate, have among them made only about 850 more than he has, while Messrs. Lane, Adkins, Darlington and Matthews, the other four who figure as having scored 1,000 runs, have aggregated 30 fewer than Mr. Higson. But the bowling figures are even more eloquent than the batting. Only two players have taken as many as 100 wickets altogether, but the captain has averaged nearly 50 a tour ! BOW LING AVERAGES.
