Cricket 1911

490 CEICKET: A WEEKLY EECOED OF THE GAME. S ept . 2 ,1911. © M t u a r g * M r. C. E. DUNLOP. It is with regret we announce that Mr. C. E. Dunlop died last week in London. He was born on June 25th, 1870, and had, there fore, only recently completed his forty-first year. He was educated at Merchiston and Oxford and played occasionally for Somerset between 1892 and 1902. His most successful season was 1893, when he scored 213 runs with an average of 26, his highest innings being 64 v. Gloucestershire, 62 v. Middlesex—both played at Taunton— and 53 not out v. Kent at Tonbridge. He was an excellent fieldsman. P. PEARCE. Peter Pearce, for over 20 years superintendent of Lord’s Cricket Ground, was found dead last week in a private garden in Wellmeddow Road, Hither Green. He was born on September 2nd, 1843. M e . G. P. SALTER. Mr. George F. Salter, who died at Chichester last week in his seventy-eighth year, was a useful cricketer in his younger days, but he will always be remembered best as the scorer for many years of the Sussex County C.C. His one match for the county was against Kent at Margate in July, 1864, when he scored 15 and 4 not out. On the first day of the match Stubberfield, Fillery and the two Lillywhites were rather late in leaving the ground, and it was getting dusk when John Lillywhite noticed a driver with a horse and water-cart entering the enclosure. Going up to him, Lillywhite enquired his business, and the driver, with all the efl'ront imaginable, and not knowing to whom he was speaking, replied that he had bet a sovereign that Kent didn’t make 50 runs in their second innings. To prevent them doing so he was about to saturate the wicket with water. But “ John ” promptly sent the man about his business. A. D. T. The ^Viinor Counties, SOUTH AND W EST DIVISION. The tables appended include the matches played by Wilts, and Dorset against tbe M.C.C., those of Surrey Second v. Lancashire Second and Yorkshire Second, Glamorgan v. Staffordshire, South Wales v. Farewell! fare well, indeed, our hope of hopes May you traverse your roads without a liitch, And conquer all, as wind across the mead Has swept obstructions to the lowest ditch ; And then strode wickedly along, until It stirred the ire ’mong early woken sheep Who shook their woolly coats, as if to warn An enemy that had disturbed their sleep. Be like that wind, and sweep your pathway clear E ’en as the barns it rattles on, so fierce, Or whistles loudly by the smithy's forge, And he a w a to ’, hears its merry pierce ; And on beyond the vine yard, where the serf Has just begun his weary round of to il; And shakes the grapes he fosters with such care, And blows aside the ridge of fresh-turned soil That he had dug last eve. So like the wind Makes all things quake when once it does begin ; Do you a mighty reputation gain, Known as a team that fights, and fights to win. P h y l . J. R ic k a b d s .
